I'm an extremely late SMT fan. Overclocked is actually the first SMT (it may be a spin-off, but it is still a part of the franchise) game I've ever played. I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to find out about this series.
Actually its my first as well. I played the first persona but didn't really get into it so I quite like after an hour or two. I've been meaning to pick up strange journey one day though!
I'm planning to play all of the games released domestically by the end of 2014. If I can find a translated ROM, I might even play the original on the SNES. My next one will definitely be Soul Hackers.
I actually recommend against that unless you're a masochist. I'll admit that I liked the first SMT, but only because a) it was the first SMT game I'd played and b) I was a masochist at the time.
It starts out really rough. You don't get a demon until an hour in, you have nothing but a knife, and good luck getting through your first encounter. Negotiations are needlessly random, stressful, and risky. Save points are few and far between, and not every dungeon has one. Instant death skills show up rather quickly. There's no indication of what demons you'll get when you fuse, making fusion a tedious reset game. Difficulty's very uneven. It's really not worth it, IMO.
How much, in your opinion, does SMT2 improve over SMT1 in terms of gameplay? And is SMT If... worth playing?
Coming to Europe 2017, perhaps? Seriously sucks to be an Atlus fan in Europe at the moment, we get to watch the rest of the world playing so many awesome games while we sit and wait. D:
That said, Devil Survivor: Overclocked is keeping me occupied nicely, even with all those annoying glitches. I was considering picking up Persona 2: Innocent Sin from the PSN store too, considering its the only Persona game in the series I haven't beaten yet. Anyone know how the game is in regards to the original Persona? I hear varying views from different people, some saying its the worst game in the series and others claiming it to be superior to P3/4.

I never played if...m vut SMT is more forgiving and a adds a few improvements, suich as demon abilities being passed down, but I still don't recommend playing it, since IIRC, there are quite a few references to 1 you'd miss that are pretty important.
If I were you, I'd stick to the PS2 and later games, including remakes/ports.

Gameplay-wise it's better than 1, but worse than 3 and 4. Story-wise, I believe it's up there with the best of the series. I loved it thoroughly.

Well, I definitely won't base my opinion of the series at large on the first few games, but it would be a shame not to expose myself to them at some point. Still, I'll take your suggestion to heart and avoid them for now.
There are so many PS2 SMT games to find and obtain. How do you like the PS2 Devil Summoner games? Those seem a bit different than the other PS2 SMT spin-offs.
I only recently got the first Devil Summoner PS2 game, but I quite like it so far. It's more action-oriented, so battles are fast-paced. I love the look and the setting, though. Haven't played enough to comment on the story.
Yeah the strategy guide alone is worth it as I've never played any in this series! It is rather an odd choice to take this series though since none of the others were on Nintendo systems?!

I was just saying it was rather an odd choice to bring this series to the 3ds as I don't think any of the other main installments have been on a Nintendo system before.

Actually, Nocturne is the only one of the main SMT games that haven't been on a Nintendo console. SMT 1 + 2, while not released in the West, WERE released on the SNES in Japan.Same with SMT If... Nocturne, admittedly, was a PS2 game. Strange Journey, which is arguably an unnumbered entry in the main SMT series was a DS exclusive, and now we're getting SMT IV as a 3DS exclusive.
are the SMT main series game DIRECTLY related to each other? what I mean is do I have to play the previous ones to undestand the others?
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

No. They're independent stories with similar themes and gameplay styles. If there are any connections, they're minor at most. All of the Atlus series are the same way, to my knowledge.
good to know I really liked the SMT games I've played but only played the spin-offs so far and was afraid of not understanding this new one.
anyway I'm pretty anxious for this one!
