@mamp yea but seriously, rottytops is such a great character, it was kind of refreshing seeing actual "friends" in such a game

So I'm curious, do we have a release date yet?

Well this thread didn't get much love. Can people post their summaries of opinions on this now that it's been released everywhere?

I really wanted this to be my first attempt at the series but the asking price was a bit too high. I could get Retro City Rampage AND Fallblox for the price of this (2 games I've been looking at).

So is it worth this price or do they need to knock a few dollars off?

I bought it a while back and have been playing it in between other stuff. Lots of fun, really fantastic humor. I'm currently in what I assume is the last section, since the difficulty curve just popped from linear to exponential.

I do think it was well worth the price. <3 Shantae!

It is definitely worth the price, although I would strongly recommend Risky's Revenge (also well worth the price) as your first Shantae. Seriously, the quality of both is amazing - it'd be hard to feel short changed.

So anyway, a summary:

I'm a huge fan of Risky's Revenge and consider that a clear 10/10. With that in mind, Pirate's Curse was my most anticipated game for several years. I'll start right away by saying I prefer the greater sense of exploration in Risky's Revenge. I also miss the animal transformations, although the Metroid-like abilities in Pirate's Curse are brilliant - Shantae controls like a dream. One thing that is outright worse is the fact items are now single use instead of using a Magic Meter. Even so, there is a good story reason for this.

Graphics are brilliant. As a slight nitpick, I couldn't help be disappointed that not more of the sprites were upgraded for the 3DS's extra resolution (the view is zoomed out rather than existing sprites improved). That said, it's perfectly understandable they couldn't re-draw everything, and the genuinely new sprites and bosses are superb. The character art is frequently beautiful, although as another nitpick, I'm not a fan of the way they are making the protagonists look younger. Risky Boots in particular has lost some va-va-voom (but again, maybe that's because of the story).

Jake Kaufman delivers another brilliant soundtrack. I do think Risky's Revenge has some slighter better tunes, but the music in Pirate's Curse is better at accentuating the drama. More than the graphics and music, though, I was most impressed with the writing. Pirate's Curse is often hilarious and exciting. I felt like saying "bravo" to the whole thing (another reason I recommend playing the DSi game first).

It's true there is a difficulty spike here and there. The last palace could actually ruin it for less skilled players, although I found it easy enough after I'd done it once (completed it four times now). Overall, it's a superbly made game - a 9/10, I think, but easily my favourite game on the eShop and possibly my favourite 3DS game of all. Strongly recommended.

Thanks for the infos.
If it goes on sale at any point, I'll definitely get it. Finally got round to playing their other eshop title Mighty Switch Force and that really surprised me, I was expecting something much more generic.

Yeah, I must admit, nothing quite hits the spot for me like a WayForward game. Graphics, music and controls are always brilliant. To me, Pirate's Curse, Mighty Switch Force and the much-overlooked Mighty Switch Force 2 are best three games on the eShop.

I know it's been over a year since the last post, but I just now got the game, so hopefully it's okay to revive it (TBH, I was surprised it was even this far back).

Anyhow, I started it up yesterday, and it's been a blast so far (my first in the series). It controls great, the art is gorgeous, and the characters so far have been likeable.

I'm currently in the dungeon of the third island (the zombie one), and am quite surprised how challenging it's been so early. Still, I like me a good "Metroidvania", and it's definitely been good so far.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

I picked this up on sale a few days ago on Switch, and man am I glad I did! I held off on it because I didn't believe the hype for some reason, but I've been having an absolute blast! The game is challenging, but every time I have thought it was being unreasonable, I have figured out that I was doing something wrong. It's the first Shantae game I have ever played. I always ignored these games because I figured they just rode on how cute Shatae is (I mean she IS a solid 10/10 when it comes to cute anime style game characters!). But it turns out there is real substance to back her cuteness up.

I also picked up Half-Genie Hero, which I am gonna play next. I hope it is as good as this one!

@Heavyarms55 I'd say that Pirate's Curse is the best in the series, but Half Genie Hero is still fun!
The DLC is a little repetitive though, it's just the same levels with different gimmicks.

I bought this again in the sale, looking forward to playing it again

Is there any major difference between the switch and 3ds versions? I’m considering getting it and it’s a bit cheaper on 3ds.

Already played it on wiiu, but I guess I’d rather have it on a handheld.

I do know from the wiiu version that the backgrounds are kinda stretched out on the bigger consoles. I expect them to be pixel perfect on 3DS.

@Delibheel

Switch version:

  • HD rumble
  • HD character portraits

3DS version:

  • Pixel art is sharper on the small screen
  • The stereoscopic 3D looks amazing
  • Easier inventory access on the touch screen

I love my Switch, but the game was designed with the 3DS in mind, and it shows.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

@Delibheel I'd never choose a 3DS version of a game when a Switch version is an option. The versatility is just that important to me. Not to mention the larger and better handheld screen. But if it is cheaper on 3DS, I can understand that.

I'm honestly more comfortable using the 2DS as a handheld... The switch is nice, but the battery isn't great, and it's a bit bulky to carry around.
