The worst part is the tax in NS is actually back up to 15% instead of 13% now. I wouldn't mind it so much if it were just on games and luxuries, but I think it's ridiculous some of the things that get taxed while other things are tax-free: like toothpaste and soap is taxed but bags of chocolate chips, large containers of ice cream, or donuts by the half-dozen aren't — not sure how that's supposed to promote health and wellness.
NS is fugged, remind me next time I'm in the province, buy stuff before-hand, unless I'm buying chips and ice cream, which knowing me, is alllll good. Edit: Wait, does NS follow the HST, or is it still PST/GST? HST is supposed to be a nationwide set amount.
NS has HST, but HST can vary from province to province. I think the point of it is the federal government collects all the money and distributes the provincial portion to the provinces. The provinces can still decide their own provincial rates, so it was pretty annoying when the GST dropped 2% and then NS decided to raise the provincial tax 2% to take back the reduction the federal government gave us.
I've bought points card for my DS while I was in Alberta (Edmonton, to be exact), and BC (Forget what city) and did not get charged tax. Also here in Oshawa, Ontario, I have not been taxed on buying points cards, or using a credit card for any online service (Like my World of Warcraft, for example). Some places do charge tax, but they're generally stores that are independently owned like a convenience store. So if I have none at work, I go to Blockbuster as it's close to my house.
Ahhh, I love being Canadian. Buy from the store? Not taxed, use points? Not taxed either. Credit card? Smooth sailing, bro.
Same here bro. Do you live in Ontario by any chance? Perhaps the provinces that don't get taxed with online transactions don't have any special laws in place for online transactions?

none that i can think of because when i tried to select ontario when regarding the location it wasnt there instead it was northeast territory or something lol i forgot they only have seperate provinces listed for the west side of canada so i was really confused on the difference and almost didnt know what to legally pick
To be fair, as I think has been stated, you were paying the tax before. The difference is that you were paying it on the point total you bought--$50 dollars in points cost $50 + tax. Now it costs 50, and the games institute tax. I prefer the old method, since this new one is gonna leave me with uneven leftover amounts even worse than Wii Points did, but it's not like you're paying more now or something. You're just paying in a different order.

I think to legally get around this you actually should only purchase a game when in these states that don't have sales tax as of yet. I'm just saying if you live close to a bordering state then cross over and change your zip. I mean it makes sense right. If I purchase a item in another state then I pay their sales tax. Just some thoughts. This is screwed up in the sense that all of us in USA should be the same across the board. This is a government issue and surprised they don't step in and force it into law!

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
Tax on prepaid cards? I thought they didn't tax those? Maybe I'm out of the loop...
It's called "The government is broke and needs more money." Simple as that. Unfair, yes, but unfortunately for large portions of the U.S., it's the way it is.
