No. If they go past a certain level (depending on the badge), they will start disobeying you

It's nicer (and a lot more sad) if you think about it this way:
He was a lonely dying old man who really wanted someone to be nice with him and spend the few days he had left with an innocent young creature.
He's also so touched by your generosity that he basically leaves all his inheritance to you. A comet shard.
