One thing I was sad when they removed is that thing where two unrelated trainers look at you at the same time and they gang on you, transforming two normal battles into a more interesting double battle.
For me, the answer is generally “the most recent one“. Nearly every gen from 2nd to 6th had at least something (or some things) changed or added that ultimately improved the series as a whole.
Although, they also sometimes removed some nice features (Battle Frontier, lack of legends to hunt in X/Y, etc). But I like to think we have it pretty good, overall.
At the same time, they went TOO crazy with the legendaries in Gens IV and V. Those generations alone had almost half the legendaries overall

POST-GAME SPOILER QUESTIONS!!!: So, is the post-game besides the Battle Tree and Pokemon League hunting Ultra Beasts as roaming legends or are they in completely new areas? And they said that Anabel was found "10 years ago", does that mean Sun and Moon takes place 10 years after ORAS?
@DarthNocturnal Even if they are new players, there are always legendaries for trade, and a wole bunch. Sure, some ask for ridiculous stuff for them, but there are so many offers that getting a shiny competitive legendary for a caterpie is a reality, and those kind of trades happen many times a day. Also, there's people that couldn't care less about them and trade any legendary they have for an actual competitive pokemon they are gonna use.
Sure, not everyone has an internet connection to play, but then again interacting with other players even if it's limited to local is one of the main objectives of the game, so giving every pokemon in one version isn't gonna happen, at least I don't think so and to be honest I never considered it much of a problem, even if I was always a bit limited to obtain certain pokemon.
It will certainly suck for those who want to complete the pokedex and are limited in options, but unless you are in a really difficult situation where it would be honestly quite weird for you to have access to a 3DS and these games to begin with, you have at least one of the options I mentioned available. Sorry if I appear as inconsiderate to anyone in this situation that is reading this (obviously if you are reading this you have internet on your side), but it's just my perspective. Sure, the main reason to make certain pokemon available in a game was so that they could sell more games, but it also gave us the excuse to see how to socialize and meet more people in the process instead of spending money to complete it. I mean, I completed my FireRed version about 5 years after the game came out because of this, but it did give me some good memmories and while I was definitely happy to complete it, I never lost some sleep because of it.
@roy130390
Yeah, if a person can get their hands on Scizor or Porygon-Z then they can trade for just about anything. Even some of the rarer Vivillon patterns can be traded for some decent 'mon. I managed to acquire a fair few legendaries in October while I was still able check the Global Link (don't use it so much now). Suicune, Heatran, several Cresselia, Cobalion, Zekrom and Kyurem are some of the legendaries I've acquired through the GTS.
@BLP_Software I was hoping for a remix, actually. The original theme doesn't quite hold up due to DS quality, and I've heard several really good fan remixes of it.
@CrazedCavalier Well, I don't mind the original. Black and White battle themes avoided that grainy sound of the DS that plagued many games. Now I just want to know where you battle him.
Actually, outside of Giovanni showing up in PWT (And Archer, appearing in FR/LG I guess?), this is the first team leader who's returned in a not sequel right? Also digging his grey outfit, mirroring Team Skull in Black and Aether in White
@BLP_Software He gives you the TM for Flame Charge and the "potential within Pokemon" lecture, but doesn't really do anything else but hang out in the Battle Tree.
@MegaBeedrill Considerig said organisation has more leaders than your party has Pokemon, its not narrowing it down.
@CrazedCavalier Thats disappointing. Sadly the game has been spoiled for me, which isnt worrying me since the game has a later release here, but....overall? Says itll do something different and doesnt in the end. Meh.
@BLP_Software I don't see what you mean. It replaced gyms and has a decent plot with actual lore, had major trainers take a page from Cynthia (max IVs and EVs in important stats), and removed HMs alongside a ton of other QOL improvements like Hyper Training.
Yes, there's still a league at the end and UBs are functionally normal Pokemon- but there's a lot of changes and differences that make it stand out and feel fresh.
@CrazedCavalier It didnt replace gyms. Trials arent a replacement they are something new which is nice. My concern is will they stand out as interesting tasks?
I saw the plot. Starts normal and goes full deep end with the villains getting weirder. I mean its not Team Flare dull but...over compensating maybe?
HMs were never an issue for me especially in Black and White/B2/W2 where they arent tied to badges and some you have to go out of your way to find. Hell i remember there only being mandatory use of any HM in the game in B/W.
I like the twist of the League. My issue is it kinda derails the island challenge. All that new stuff....Pokemon League.
Now, actual challenge? With or without the new exp share because XY was either easy or rough as hell based on that thing.
I suppose as long as it isnt HG/SS levels of bassackwards game design Im okay. And as long as it isnt as flawed in many ways as XY that it hampers the experience, it sont be my least favourite Pokemon games.
@BLP_Software Trials are something new, as you said, which are in place of gyms- you still fight the Leader/Captain at the end.
The postgame Looker quest and stuff flesh things out. Really, I think it beats out BW here.
HMs have always been pretty much required in some capacity- forcing you to burden a 'mon with them, potentially even having to only have four pokemon on your team with two being HM slaves.
The League gives you challenging trainers at the end to top things off. I don't really object to it.
The game has BW's XP system- the amount of XP gained scales to the 'mons level. This basically nerfed the new EXP share and made it more workable- you level up weak 'mons even faster and stronger 'mons aren't going to get over leveled near as easily.
Sun and Moon seem better than X and Y in every single regard to me.
Really, this argument is kinda pointless as @Tsurii has hinted at. I'm pretty sure neither of us have played the game yet, even.
