How difficult is this game and how much replay value will it get me? I loved Mario 3D Land, but I beat every level with both Mario and Luigi, got a Golden Flag, got every star coin, and beat the ultimate secret level in 18 hours 26 minutes, according to my activity log. I even did a little bit of speed running, so I arguably did more then absolutely everything in the game. I played Resident Evil: The Mercenaries for over 27 hours, so yeah. I don't want to get this game at $40 if it has the same kind of play value as 3D land. Oh, and I doubt I'll ever play co-op, so that also puts a damper on things. Thanks to however answers my question.

Question: I read about 2 players being able to play co-op on two different 3ds. You have to also have a copy of Mario bros. 2 in each console. I am assuming it only works with two game cartridges? I don't think you can have a digital download of the game on one console and a cartridge in the other?
I'm already going to get to World 6 (the last of the main course, haven't done the other 2 worlds yet) and it is fairly straightforward.
HOWEVER ! The levels are pretty well laid out and you kinda have the feeling that it is an entierely new team that is behind the courses, as it has a different feeling and pretty inventive situations. Also, they offer a few opportunities for exploration, which will probably be crucial for Coin Rush, but the levels are also designed for speedrunners. And there is that 1 million coin thingie that could motivate, though I lazy so I'll probably don't even go past the 100 000 ^^'
So yeah, I recommend it, but you really need to put aside the fact it looks and sounds the same, the feeling here is slightly different (and Reznor is really cute)
Edit : Nintendnut : you need two cartridges unfortunately :/ And as far as the digital/retail thing go, I'm pretty sure it'll be compatible, but we'll wait and see when the game is actuelly released digitally ^^
I got an e-mail from Nintendo. It launches at midnight in US on the eShop. I'll let you guess what I'm doing at midnight on August 19, conveniently my half birthday.
I've noticed by gameplay videos that the levels are pretty inventive, I can definitely tell its a new team. I think its actually a good thing that we got a Mario game with mostly a younger development team. While they played it safe with the audio and visuals, the level designs seem to be very creative, something that I think improves over the original New Super Mario Bros. level designs.
The more experienced team seems to be going all out with the presentation in New Super Mario Bros. U so I'm pretty excited for what looks to be a fresh experience.
Perhaps, two Mario games in one year won't be so bad after all?
That... is basically what I just said two posts ago ^^' And yeah having actually played the game, I can confirm that they are more inventive on this one ^^
But is it actually worth 45€ ? Eh, I don't really know. 30 would've been great value.

But is it our time or "Nintendo time"?
You know, delaying stuff till the very last moment. xD

It will work with both digital and retail copies of the game. The digital version is the full game; not a gimped version. Both players have to have a copy of the game, but whether their copies are retail or digital, they should have no trouble playing together.

Thanks you guys are really knowledgeable. I am so looking forward now to picking up my new Cherry 3DS XL and Mario Bros. 2. By the way what did you mean by the digital version is somehow better than the cartridge??? Also is is possible to play co op mode with another player via the wifi, like someone else with a 3ds no where near you?
I didn't mean that the digital version was better; I just meant that it had all of the content of the retail one. Sadly though, the game only supports local multiplayer, so no online via wi-fi.
@moomoo Have any leftover eShop credit? I do, thus the game will only be like $15 for me.

Wait what? Doesn't that mean that you already spent money though? I only have a little more than $2, so I'd have to spend an additional $40, because you can't just ask for $38, so that would leave me with... $2.
I think I'll wait on this for now. There's other stuff I'd rather put my money in.
I remember hearing that you could do this on the eShop, hope its true, because it bugged me on the Wii's shop. Always ended up with something like 200 points or something. >.>
