ANYWAYS 4U is basically a new game to us since MH4 never made it here. So, MH4U more important than MM.

I'm trying to decide between starting off with either the insect glaive or the long sword. Any suggestions? Any other weapons you guys would suggest I try?

Usually beginners either start off with the Sword and Shield, or sometimes the Great Sword. I'm pretty good with the Gunlance, though.

The insect glaive is a pretty complex weapon, I would start on the long sword. It's pretty simple; your A & X attacks charge the energy bar. You can use R to slice and consume that energy. You should charge the bar fully, the press R until the combo finishes, sheathing your blade. If the last stroke of the combo hit a monster you will graduate to a glowing white blade, increasing your attack.

The levels are normal, white, yellow, then red, each more powerful than the last. Each level makes it easier to charge up the R attack bar as well as having a shorter buff duration. When the attack buff elapses your sword will stop glowing; then you'll have to charge up again. If you can stay yellow or red for most of the time you will be dealing a lot of damage.

Also, try to combine A & X in such a way that you maintain a continuous combo, to charge up faster.
