So I backed up my sd card to my phone, put it back in my 2ds xl, played a game for 5 seconds (pokemon red), and copied the backup onto the sd card. But when I put it back into my ds a second time, ALL of my games were gone. What the heck happened??? Same 2ds xl, same sd card, yet it still failed to load software. Pictures were all there though.

Sounds like you MOVED stuff OFF of your SD card rather than copying it.

I was trying to see whether there was a loophole to the no backups thing for Pokemon Red, as I was wanting to start some glitches (which could result in save corruption, rip Charizard and TopPercent the Rattata)

I was able to restore some save data (3d Land, Super Mario Bros Deluxe, and Mini Mario Amiibo Challenge so far) also rip mage me, knight mario and luigi, and cleric zelda

When you try to exploit potential loopholes, sometimes you get burned. Sounds like you might be out of luck.

When you copied to the phone and back it just wiped clean the update folder with the older folders. That's pretty plain to see here. It will not touch the phone files since those aren't Nintendo file format.

yah, why would you try to copy the info at all ???
your games are retrievable from the Nintendo store and any saves could have been archived on system memory, so there was no reason to try and copy the card to a non Nintendo device

simple backup doesn't work for Pokemon Red.

Might have been that my phone died in the phone to SD card part.
