What is it that Smartphones have that the 3DS doesn't besides free games? This is really making me wonder of how exactly Nintendo can compete in the App industry seeing that the competition there is really hard......
I think its a lot easier to get your game published, big or small. Also, in-app purchases are big, and finally, smartphones are popular. Why not develop for something that millions upon millions of people will buy anyway? So sales of the "cpnsole" itese;f aren't holding back companies, like the Wii U, for example, may be.
My opinion is that it should compete by not competing. They need to continue to market them as being gaming only devices vs. the general fun ctionality of a phone. Games can be optimized, better quality and more complicated on a device made for them. Positioning a handheld gaming device against a phone is very ill advised because on paper the phone/tablet wins on paper every time.
smartphones have more processing speed, higher ram, better touchscreen, the fact you can make calls and use mobile networks directly, more customization(in more ways than one), tons of non gaming apps, better cameras, a lot of functions you'll never use(like a barometer, why the hell some phones have it?)
basically the 3DS can compete with "mobile gaming" because it is made for gaming and little else, but no freaking way the 3DS can compete with Smartphones and all their handy(or flashy) non-gaming features
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

Isn't the dev kit really lame? I heard lots of devs not liking the dev kit for an average apple phone.

By not competing against them. Smart Phone market is a race to the bottom. The current market if the 3DS is healthy and the demand for gaming only devices will not disappear. The 3DS doesn't need to compete with Smart Phones it needs to be a better gaming choice than Smart Phones.

Yeah, but there are a hell of lot more guides out there on how to develop for iPhone/iPad than there are for 3DS/WiiU. I dunno, though, it's good enough that a lot of people can use it well enough, and it's a lot easier to get a hold of. My Mac Mini came with the XCode thingy built in, while is literally all I need to develop for iPhone/iPad, if I chose to do so (I don't know how to program as of right now).
It can't and shouldn't. The 3DS is a very gaming oriented device, it's designed for people that specifically want to play video games. Mobile devices, on the other hand, only see gaming as a small piece of the picture in a more general entertainment package. Most of the people playing games on smartphones don't really care about gaming to begin with, to them gaming is just a quick 1 minute distraction for when they're waiting at the bus stop. The mobile market is liable to not care about the 3DS' games, they just want a do everything device that gives them cheap entertainment.
