I'll laugh if a Prime 4 does happen and fans still bash it.
Of course they will bash it. The Prime series is over, Federation Force will be the 6th game in that sub-series. Lets see something new instead of the same game over and over.
People claim they want new games but when those new games are announced people bash them for not being the old games but when those are announced people bash them because they aren't new. The cycle will never end.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
That's a silly assumption. If Prime 4 had been announced everyone would be happy. No one was clamoring for a change to the Prime series, just like no one is clamoring for a change to the 2D Metroids. I know it's the internet so someone will always be unhappy, but it's quite clear that Federation Force is not what most people wanted after 6 years of nothing, especially after Other M, and they're letting it be known. And that's fair. It's annoying to always see people try and dismiss valid reasons to be upset as "Well you're never happy!"

I know right? Its actually worse than the cycle that SEGA goes through to make proper Sonic games. Many criticize Link Between Worlds for its artstyle and I was like.....what? Instead of criticizing it for being too easy and not as difficult as Link's Awakening, the artstyle is the biggest threat? wow. And no, I don't find that stupid because visuals are a subjective thing. I've played games that don't have good visuals in them and I find those games incredibly amazing like Super Mario Land( and yes I said that because the Game Boy was far more powerful to have better visuals before Land 2 showed up so there!)

The are always valid reasons to be upset with a game, but petitions to get a game cancelled is just insane. People would rather not have a Metroid game instead of getting a fun spin-off.

It's because they have to do new right. They can't just throw everything out the window and do a completely new gameplay style because then all of the appeal of that game is gone too. But at the same time, if they recycle the formula ad nauseum like they do with NSMB, then the player gets bored. They have to strike a careful balance between the two if they want to keep people's attention. The Prime Trilogy is one of the few examples of a game series (or at least that I know of) that even comes close to getting this balance right, the general formula and a lot of the core powerups stay the same from game to game, but they introduce some new ones as well as some interesting twists on the formula (such as the light/dark world system, the PED Suit, and ship controls).
Federation Force's problem is that it's too far in the direction of throwing everything out the window, the elements of the game people like such as the exploration, the iconic abilities, and the isolation are gone. So it doesn't work as a successor to the Prime trilogy. In fact, without those elements I don't even think it works as a spinoff, it's not doing much to justify the Metroid branding.

Ah okay I agree. Those extremists didn't do any favors for those with understandable grievances. I'm sure when all is said and done, it'll be a fun game for the 3DS.

Neither did the other two spin-offs. Hunters (if I am remembering correctly) had super linear levels, generic abilities, and you were constantly running into other characters but most people seem to be accepting of that game. Federation Force is even more of a Spin-off than Hunters. Once the game is out we will be able to see more accurately how Federation Force stacks up against Hunters but so far, Federation Force at least looks like the better game. (so far)

"We would like to see a game without samus aran to expand on the metroid universe" - Wikitroid 2 years later
"WHY IS THERE NO SAMUS ARAN IN FEDERATION FORCE? PETITION TO CANCEL NAO!"
Just an example of how people actually were asking for some of the things FF brings, and then suddenly the phrase "be careful what you wish for" took it's toll and pissed the world off. Yeah it's the internet, I never heard of a game that had more supporters than critics, but regardless FF was just over the top, setting the butt hurt through the roof which made history.
Not saying I don't like this game, I look forward to it, but the reaction itself.. if I was a game developer, I'd be the type to just not even care anymore and throw a beta at them knowing it'll be hated regardless of how well made the final game is.
anyone mad at this game is missing the point. Period. You should be mad that they are not making a new main Metroid Prime game post-2007 despite literally NO ONE in the game industry making a Metroid Prime-like game. Honestly first person gaming has partially failed because Metroid Prime hasn't been a massively influential title.

You cite wikitroid as if literally anyone can't edit it to say whatever they want. Just going through any Metroid article over the years, no one was sick of the Prime games. No one was asking for a game without Samus save for a very tiny group if that.
Compare that to the New Super Mario Bros games where it's almost universally agreed that those games have overstayed their welcome, and need to change to stay interesting. I've seen many games that have more supporters than critics. Take a look at Fallout 4, or Skyrim. Pretty much any Bethesday game. Even in the Nintendo community, we have overwhelming positive reactions to most of the games they announce. Wooly World is a recent one. 3D World as well.
Federation Force is an odd one out with just how massive the backlash was. I hadn't seen such a negative reaction to a Nintendo game in quite a while Which is quite telling. Federation Force would have been received a lot better by the community if we knew when the next regular Metroid game was gonna come. But after 6 years and Other M, getting handed a spinoff not even developed by the guys we trust (2D devs or Retro), it's strange to think Nintendo didn't see it coming. I'm sure it'll be a really awesome game, but they really could have timed it better.

3D World and Woolly World didn't have "overwhelmingly positive" reactions.

That's part of it, but a co-op FPS in small arena-like areas also isn't a good use of the Metroid brand name.

I've seen multiple sources claiming to want a game without samus (I'm not searching all over the place for them), but wikitroid, although a "wiki" still shows opinions from die hard metroid fans, which is enough of a source that a very strict metroid fan base once requested a project like this.
Meh, wikipedia can be edited by anyone, but usually all the information is deleted if it's not from official staff in the end anyway. Besides the point, my control point is the fan base, not the entire community of wikis. Fans of metroid who data mine the games, have said they wanted a game without samus.. got it.. and then flipped out (if they did, but the percentage ratio seems high enough to assume they reacted poorly.)

Then you and I live in different dimensions because I'd be hard pressed to find a group of people who have bad things to say about either of them aside from "too easy" or "not galaxy". If you're talking about 3D world's reception when it was revealed, that was limited to the disappointing graphics, which were improved. Now it's heralded as one of the best platformers ever created. As much as I disagree with that sentiment.

Maybe but it would be a fine change of pace if there was something closer to what people like Metroid being focused on as well. I want my favorite series to try all the cool things it can, don't limit to it. If it doesn't work oh well, we'll just wait for the next one. That was my opinion of Other M until I realized how long it was taking to get a new Metroid.

I haven't seen a lot of negativity about Yoshi's Woolly World, but I haven't seen a lot of positivity either. The reception seems to amount to "meh, another 2D platformer". As for 3D World, I've seen a lot of positivity for that game (undeserved positivity, but positivity nonetheless), but also a lot of people who didn't want another generic linear platformer like NSMB and 3D Land. There is definitely not universal praise for either. In fact, aside from Splatoon I don't think there's much if anything Nintendo's done this generation that was universally liked, the lineup as a whole is very divisive.

That's one option, but if FF itself was closer to a typical Metroid game there wouldn't be as much complaints either.
@Bolt_Strike: You can find negative opinions about any game. I think the question is what are the majority saying and why?
And that's the thing, if there's not a universal agreement (i.e. 90-95% of the fanbase shares the same opinion), then the reactions aren't "overwhelmingly positive". And I can't quite say that for 3D World or Yoshi's Woolly World. With 3D World there's a large minority of fans (definitely more than 10%) who don't like the trend towards NSMB style and I haven't seen a lot of people talk about Yoshi's Woolly World at all.
Guess it's just me then, because I've seen nothing but happiness for both those games. I'm one of the very few that doesn't really like 3D world, but everyone else seems in love with it. Even Wooly World everyone seems really happy with it. Another example would be Hyrule Warriors. I don't think I've seen much dislike for that game either. I would definitely argue that the Wii U isn't divisive among its owners when it comes to the software.
