Topic: A 3DS VS DS console battle. Which had the better games??

I say DS. The games were so well rounded.

3DS is more advanced though, it is more advanced because it had better graphics, a VC, some cool games and apps.

DS imo, the library is still so good, the games can be dated now tho

Considering the 3DS plays DS games it's obviously the better console - best of both worlds.

3DS - because it had both libraries. This was easy. Ask me another one.

Less facetiously, it depends what you are looking for. The DS has a truly inventive library. Anything involving thought, puzzles, off the wall mechanics, unusual storytelling - the DS edges it. Even if too many of its RPGs ended up being TRPGs.

The 3DS is far, far better for action games, though. Better Zelda titles. Monster Hunter. Better Fire Emblems, too.

Would I take Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick, 999, Dawn of Sorrow and The World Ends With You over FE Awakening, Link Between Worlds, SMT Apocalypse, Metroid: Samus Returns and Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon? Honestly, I don’t know - but I’m glad we get both.

3DS has better 1st party, DS had better 3rd party (but I feel the average quality of the 3DS’ 3rd party library was about the same, just less quantity).

In term of graphic, 3DS > NDS.
But in term of game library diversity, NDS > 3DS.

I'm going to say 3Ds. It has backwards compatibility with the old DS games, and has a bigger and better library. Not to mention, it's effectively a JRPG machine, with loads and loads of them being made for the console alone.

I'd go with 3DS over DS ... the N64 remakes and Wii ports were great. So were some of the sequels, like Kid Icarus: Uprising and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Lots of other good ones too ... I just think of the 3DS as one of the absolute best systems ever (though I do think the Switch now takes the cake from it).

But as I read others' responses, I do realize that I probably underrate some of the inventiveness of the DS library relative to the 3DS library. I know I loved it a lot at the time, and look back on the system fondly!

For me it'd be 3ds because of the enhanced graphics, backwards compatibility, new mechanics, built in apps, many themes and badges

@Slowdive True, but most of them aren't really accessible anymore, since the DS didn't really have an eshop of it's own, and used copies are probably extremely hard to actually track down.

I'm gonna go with the DS. Jump Ultimate Stars, Elite Beat Agents, Prof Layton and The Curious Village and FFIV were my highlights.

Easily DS. 3DS hit a really bad spot for me in terms of what games I want and interest in buying games in general. No Advance Wars but all Fire Emblem. Rhythm Heaven and Warioware are just really well put together collections. Mario spinoffs no one cared about on a 3DS. Paper Mario running into a brick wall and then deciding "well the next 2 times I'll hit it better" instead of not running into a brick wall, thus making the 3DS game worse in hindsight. 3rd party support dying a death. Ace Attorney mostly stuck as download only because reasons. Almost the entirety of niche games becoming download only, and a lack of 3rd party interest even when 3DS sold well. And playing the system has been mildly painful for my hands sometimes and the main gimmick was mildly painful for my neck. Not helping matters.

Also, on DS I had a cool mix of popular and niche games and on 3DS the popular games interest me less, and the niche games only sometimes existed and only sometimes I wanted on a handheld. I will say though, there are just a bunch of things that got in the way of me appreciating or even playing 3DS games as much so maybe if I played enough of them, my mind could be changed. But I kinda doubt it, not like I played every great DS game either...

The one BIG positive I got from 3DS is that enough of the games I bought, especially later on, gave me a new appreciation for chill, shorter game sessions and games that are good for them. There was some sort of point to those annoying "you sure have been playing for a while" messages, as misguided as that probably was. Certain short Gameboy games were great for that, quick Megaman Legacy Collection challenges, mindlessly playing 1/3 or 1/2 of a Project X Zone battle and especially Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and certain puzzle games. Good times.

@Wargoose ya. DS all the way for games!!! Some have aged terribly but others haven’t. @VoidofLight glad my collection is complete for the ds then. But you would be correct. Prices are crazy!!

The DS easily. It just had better games overall. Plus 3DS had that really rocky start and we almost got mega man legends 3 then just like that it was cancelled. Sure the 3DS had the eshop and that was cool but it just seemed like they killed it too soon. Once all the popular first party gameboy games were released they just stopped adding anything but junk. Oh and they could have easily added GBA games to the 3DS eshop but they never did. The ambassador program for early adopters proves it worked. Yeah and the 3D thing with 3DS seemed like a failed experiment. I was bored with it after the first month of owning the thing. It barely worked right and i got tired of the double images so i turned it off and never used it again. Besides it sucked the battery dry.

I literally can't think of more than 20 or so 3DS games i consider must haves and the rest is all filler. I'd be here all night if i listed my favorite DS games.

I think the DS library had more creativity about the games. As a console the more modern 3DS is better of course, don't forget the DS had backward compatibility for GBA, or at least the phat one did.

@Chris77 true true. I believe the Lite had gba backwards compatibility as well. Very easy to forget those details. It’s always better to have me an option to play gba!!

I'll go for the 3DS. Its games library was so good that it was flat out embarrassing the Wii U for most of that machine's life
