I'm not gonna go on the "Wii U will get better guys!" reply but it is amusing how much 3DS' first year sucked in retrospect and now it's Nintendo's saving grace basically.
I'm sure the 'Wii U will get better' posts are on their way, so you might as well not bother anyway And if the differences between the third party situation on the Wii U vs 3DS weren't so significant, there would be a lot more hope.
The 3DS. What? It's got an absolute ton of great games (both first and third party), whereas the Wii U has only a couple (of which most are only minor games).
That's not to say some Wii U games aren't better than some 3DS games (Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros U are better than Mario 3D Land and New Super Mario Bros 2), but the Wii U doesn't have Pokemon, The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, any Mario RPGs, Fire Emblem Awakening or Animal Crossing New Leaf.
Still playing 3DS but will have Switch soon for multiplayer with friends. I miss you guys! Adam, Joni, Gavin and the rest of the Blue Rogues from the Phantasy Star Zero Days.
I have a feeling I'm going to use my Wii U way more in 2014 because of all the amazing titles coming out for it! Mario Kart 8! Smash Bros.! Donkey Kong TF! Watchdogs! Yarn Yoshi!

3DS by far. It simple does not get any better then this, the 3DS is steamrolling, a small grasp of retail releases the past year: Emblem: Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Luigi & Mario: Dream Team, Zelda Link between Two Worlds, Pokémon X & Y, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Etrian Odyssey IV, Bravery Default, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner , Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy , Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon,...
In the end it's a console versus handheld, as in apples vs oranges topped of with a bit of collective cognitive dissonance.
In short, go for what appeals you the most.
Because consoles will always be superior to handhelds.
I tend to dip in and out with handhelds, i generally find them uncomfortable to play most of the time.
I find this statement rather odd, because I've never owned a home console... only handhelds (GBA SP, DS Lite, and now 3DS)... so almost every game I've ever owned has been for a handheld (or for the PC)...
I don't see much on the horizon next year for the 3DS as far as first and third party is concerned
Just more inferior sequels with weaker frame rates.
My 3DS has been mainly used for the Virtual Console. I think many of games are a wee' bit overrated....One of the latest that i've played was Luigi's Mansion 2, which wasn't even that fun, it grew tedious towards the mid point and was rarely ever challenging. It feels like a portable gamecube with stereoscopic 3D visuals with 3D(as in polygon) gaming being the main focus. I prefered the DS's sprite-ier library hehe.
The only good games on 3DS that showcase what the system is capable of is Resident Evil Revelations, Mario 3D Land and the MD 3D classics... Everything else like ACNL, Pokenoids and those mediocre not as good as the 16-Bit era RPGs could have easily lived on the GBA or DS no problem.
There is nothing on the horizon with the same quality as RE:R and SM3DL that's for sure

Is there anything on the horizon? A Link Between worlds looks pretty solid, still need to play my copies of Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus: Uprising, not to mention dive into Zelda OOT and the stale looking NSMB.2. Other than that, there's still no Mega Man, no ClassicVania or even Metroidvania(just western trash where SImon Belmont controls like a broke down truck), no contra ect ect. I don't gel with the Gamecube era and that's exactly what the 3DS is starting to feel to like in terms of variety and retail game selection. The DS Lite on the other hand was and still is amazing.
Don't get me wrong, i love the stereoscopic 3D effect, and the 3DS's VC. But most of these highly praised 3DS retail and 3DSware titles that ive completed just haven't lived up to their stellar scores.. I even found RE: Revelations to be a total mixed bag. Maybe if they took out the mindless episodic BroShooter filler stages that were originally plunked in between the ACTUAL game, while extending the main game, and doing something more interesting with touch-based control puzzles/while offering more variety instead of what they gave us? we may of had a total winner on our hands. as is, it's like eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich while guzzling down a santa barf milkshake. But dang, the final boss bottle and last few minutes of the game were superbo' It was like a missing environment from the remake.
Anyhoo, i'll admit...Kid Icarus seems a little overwhelming, with the amount of weapons and upgrading at your disposal. Maybe i should just play it with pits regular weapon and funk the rest.
It's sad that a mediocre Resident Evil is still one of the best examples of what the 3DS can achieve
@MAB@CountWavula It's kinda weird; I strongly agree with half of what you guys are saying and strongly disagree with the other half, haha! I'm actually in the middle of playing Resident Evil Revelations and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and I'm not sure which one I like more at this point! Although ALBW got the better reviews, I think RE:R is just as good. (in fact I'm just now on the first actual boss of RE:R, and boy is he something, lol)
Also, sounds like you guys aren't too big on Pokémon, either, so that's a big major release that you guys won't be interested in... thus there won't seem like there's quite as much on offer for 3DS as there is for some other people (like me).

I like RE:R as a great game that showed what the 3DS can do if a developer really put the effort in. But as a RE game it was another RE4/5/6 action brodude fest with the exception of Jill's awesome bits
@MAB: Maybe I'm enjoying it more since it's the first M-rated game I've ever owned, haha! So I have nothing to compare it to, really. I'm having loads of fun!
It's one of my favorites!
...I'm a really big fan of Pac-Man and Galaga, though, so I'm slightly biased, haha. Pac-Man Championship Edition and Galaga Legions are amazing (especially in 3D)! The 3D effect in regular Pac-Man and Galaga is a little weird, so I usually just play them in 2D (and the menu for Pac-Man is the Japanese version, and there's no way to switch it, which is weird...), but Pac-Man Tilt and Galaga 3D Impact are extremely throwaway... but are still fun for a bit at least. But they don't bother me 'cause the other four games are so great! And it has online leaderboards, too, which is cool.
