I'll agree the design isn't as appealing asthetically, but it seems much more functional. Little changes like the stylus and headphone jack placementare very much welcomed. Add in the extra size, and I think this will easily top the original in terms of comfort (at least for me and my big hands) and that almost alone is a system seller for me.
@Tasuki
The GBA did have a headphone jack. Or are you talking about the GBA SP? Yeah, leaving it off of there was really stupid of Nintendo.
I dont know the 3DSXL just look like it was cheaply made compare to the 3DS. From the change to the paint job to the change in the stylus.
The funny thing is, is that the original 3DS looks like the higher end redesign where as the XL looks like a earlier/previous design or like it's part of the DSi family. It's odd that nintendo never kept the multi colored cake layer design and sparkel finish...And matte just looks cheap in comparison to gloss imo.
the fact that the xl won't sell at a loss while the original 3DS does for just $30 less should tell you that nintendo probably cut a few corners in order to keep a larger system profitable at nearly the same price, but if corners have to be cut it's best to cut them in superficial places. the 3ds had a really high quality paintjob and it probably saved a fair amount to get rid of it without impacting the actual performance of the system.
the current 3ds models apparently are using lower quality screens than launch models to soften the blow on hardware losses. that's the sort of cheapness to be concerned about, from what most reviewers have said the xl doesn't seem to have that problem. if a cheap finish means you can keep good screens, i'm all for it.
The screens are different but there not lower quality. I posted this a few months back.
As you can see, both devices are set on the minimal brightness level. It's obvious that the Zelda special edition (to the right) is brighter.
But this is not the only difference.
Zelda Special edition screen is slightly more yellow. That doesn't appear on the picture, but it's obvious to the naked eye.
And, more surprising, it's a lot sharper for 3D display.
I was really stunned to note that, on Rayman 3D, all the ugly crosstalk was gone on the Zelda edition 3DS when it was just horrible on the other one.
All of this make me believe that this is not just the same panel on these consoles.
Unfortunately, as the 3D panel is more yellow on the Zelda edition, there is a noticable difference in color between the bottom an the top screen. But this is not a big deal, compared to the benefits of this new screen.
I don't really see what's so ugly about it, I love how the XL looks!
I live in a very sunny place and every time I use my 3DS in a car or next to a window or just outside, the reflection produced by the back of the top screen gets everywhere... Though I must say it makes a pretty good emergency mirror.
Not to mention the shinny paint is coming off from the buttons of my 3DS (specially the d-pad), this model seems to be pretty much paint-less.
And the Sel-Home-Start buttons, omg these buttons are real buttons on this model!
I like the desgin more than the OG 3DS, but I find the coloring to be off for some reason. The silver looks good but the red & blue seems sloppy to me. That and Overall I think the desgin is weaker than the Dsi XL.. Not sure if the coloring process is different or because the Dsi used more muted colors but I prefer that.
WAT!
Hey check out my awesome new youtube channel shingi70 where I update weekly on the latest gaming and comic news form a level headed perspective.
I also prefer the design of the 3DS XL. It just looks more sleek, comfotable, and stainless compared to how the 3DS was. Most of the time I use my 3DS, I place it on the stand that was included with Kid Icarus because of the unrounded edges makes my hands tired of its grip. Plus, I like the matte finish on this version. I'm tired of looking at those fingerprints every time I open it up.
When I saw the original 3DS design I was compelled to pass. It just looked like an old SP to me with a 3D screen. It just looked too small and boxy to take advantage of any new features. Now with the 3DS XL, all of these issues are addressed. Finally I can get the bigger displays I want. Ergonomics look clearly more comfortable. Matte colors are all attractive to me, bye bye prints. Can't wait till the 19th!!!
The fact that the top is not flat and more roundish makes me happy. And the lack of gloss? Good I say. Imagine dragging your finger across the XL. Smooth, no resistance. That makes me happy.
Stare into the XL's blue model. Just stare. It's calming. It isn't trying to stand out like it's shiny diva little sister.
...For serious, I think that that Blue XL has like a neutralizing effect on the human mind.
I love how it looks too. Sometimes I just wonder if some people here have buyer's remorse.
i do think it looks good, but i also think you can objectively say that it's not nearly as elaborate or unique as the original. the xl is missing all of the references to 3D that were worked into the original design; the 3-tier scheme, from light to dark with each layer, was a symbol for 3D depth and the sparkly resin upper lid was another nod to 3D. if you really hold it up to the light and look into it you can see the actual plastic body of the upper lid through the resin coating, and it's about the same size as the lower one; it's the resin alone that makes up those slanted edges on the sides, and because it's semi-transparent you can see a ton of metallic sparkles at different depths inside.
the xl has none of that 3D love in its design. it's definitely improved functionally, but nintendo clearly went in a more plain and basic direction with it's looks. some people may prefer that, but i think the original design was artistically brilliant. just look at this sexy thing: http://gamernation.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/3ds_red_s...
as far as the current 3DS screens go, i think the yellow discoloration does mean that they're cheaper even if the image appears sharper. i remember seeing your thread but i forgot how the photos looked, this site has a similar comparison and the new screens seem a lot less clear: http://3dstribe.com/news/nintendo-3ds-newer-models-screen-che...
I like the layer cake design of the original, but IMO, that's the only thing I'll miss... XL wouldn't look nearly as good without rounded edges though.
