I don't foresee a new iteration being released for probably another couple of years, but I do think that further iterations are probably inevitable. Iwata didn't completely rule out the possibility of further revisions; he just said that there probably wouldn't be another "in the near future." In a few years though, they may do like they did with the DSi, and use it as kind of a testing ground for features that will be more thoroughly implemented in their next handheld (the way DSi did with the cameras, music player, and, probably most importantly, DSi Shop).
I bet they'll announce a new model as soon as I decide to replace my launch 3DS.
Hopefully I won't be needing to do that for a while, but I might get tempted if that Colbat Blue model makes its way over here...
And you believe that? Just a few weeks ago Nintendo said there wouldn't be a revision at all, and denied the existence of the XL. Based on that link, they could announce a new 3DS at any time now.

The XL is a revision? It doesn't add anything content wise, all it really is is a bigger system, which as a result of more room increases the size of the battery as well. There are no real technical differences. The design is a bit different, of course, but also is not really any more superior than the current.
This is an option, not a revision. The original DS had revisions to add things that were not relevant at the systems launch, but became much more important, like a DLC store.
Unless another thing happens that will cause BOTH the Vita and 3DS to revise, I doubt there will be another revision. And no, the Circle Pad is not worth a revision.

I don't really care what you call it, it's a new 3DS with revised features, including size. My point was that Nintendo or its president saying there won't be a new 3DS is not very credible, considering that was their stance a week ago before the reveal of the XL. A revision is an option, sure. An option can be a revision. I don't care. They are just different terms with definitions relative to be user.
"In the near future" = "September 2012: Nintendo unveils the 3DS Lite! Now with added Circle P-- haha naw, we just trolling. Circle Pad Pro Lite coming soon!"
Well what can they do? The 3DS is already smaller then the Lite, the 3DS is bigger then the LL. They can't add 2 shoulder buttons unless you want a brick. Games that support the CPP also use the shoulder buttons and if they added the circle pad you might not even be able to play some of the games that you could already with the CCP.

Larger screens and better battery life is ideal but I think I'm content with my Flame Red 3DS. Got it from Newegg on sale a few months ago for $148. This XL's $199.99 price tag is a bitter pill to swallow though. You can just get the Nyko Power Pak+ for the original 3DS to extend its battery life. That thing is usually on sale for like $5-10.
I think a lot of people were surprised they didn't include the 2nd analog stick which means we'd have to buy a Circle Pad Pro but if Nintendo had done that, then then developers would probably only make their games to fit with the new model's control scheme. At least now they have to still make games to convenience players who don't have a Circle Pad Pro. I really wish that Circle Pad Pro would drop in price. $20 is a lot.
@Miss_Birdo Thanks for sharing that. It's really nice to finally see some good clear footage of the silver system. Now I'm really sold on it; if only NA would release it.
It looks so much better "in person" than the static images shown when it was first announced. At least what I saw. I really wish the silver one was coming to North America. Still I don't plan on upgrading my 3DS anytime soon, so hopefully by the time I want to, which would be a in a few years, that color would be available.

My thoughts exactly. The images that Nintendo showed were far from flattering, and made the system look like a $200 Lego brick with cameras. But if the video of the blue one that someone linked here the other day is any indication, the color appears to be fairly similar to the Aqua Blue regular 3DS. In a way, I'm glad NA is holding off on releasing the Silver one though, as I currently don't have the extra to splurge on one and that silver would surely tempt me!

Well, every day my 3DS gets more and more damaged. The irremovable scratches on the top screen, as well as recents on the bottom screen from furious Kid Icarus plays, half of a depth slider remaining, missing one of the ridges on the top of the back screen, another irremovable scratch on the back, along with all four corners on the bottom half to be WEARED AWAY until they are rounded like the XL...
I actually wish this would come out sooner, so my 3DS doesn't shatter before then. Having such a small device after the DSiXL caused a bit of a relationship to form with 3DS and the floor.
Well I just don't have the money, to be honest, its not the best timing. Shouldn't they be more focused on Wii U? I mean that's why I'm not getting this. I don't have the money to drop $200 and expect to have enough for the Wii U when it comes out. My 3DS right now is fine as it is, but I would definitely consider upgrading to this eventually. At least, if Nintendo doesn't roll out a 3rd version, which I'm not doubting they will.
