The idea of DS and VC in their original resolution but not completely tiny is so awesome. The 3D effect must look so outstanding and immersive on a screen that big too. This thing definitely has it's advantages, but I just can't warrant buying it when me and my brother both already have a 3DS.
DAMN. IT. i really like the original 3DS design better, but seeing that giant screen in 3D is tempting.

Overall, I like the original 3DS design much better, but Nintendo has definitely made a nice upgrade. I can't believe I'm saying this, but maybe this isn't so bad afterall. The thing is, I don't have the money for this, not if I want a Wii U. I just bought my 3DS last year so the timing is a little annoying.
My question is, why couldn't we have just gotten a mashup of the two, as the original design? Wouldn't it be wonderful if Nintendo could just give us a well designed handheld and actually stick with it? Its just upsetting when I feel like I just bought my 3DS and Nintendo has already found a way to make it inferior. I know some people say its just another option, but to me, options is different color choices. This is completely different. I don't know, its nothing new, they've been doing this ever since the Game Boy so whatever ._.
For me to ever consider getting one, the screen has to completely blow me away when I test it out.
I really don't like the design of it, and I've always liked portable systems that are more small and compact.
I'm more likely going to replace my launch 3DS at some point with another original model.
If I ever did get one, I'd probably use it at home and then switch to my original model when I go out.
I guess that's the good thing about 3DS games saving to the game cartridge.
The only complication that I can think of is eShop games.
I'd still only be able to play them on my normal 3DS, unless I did a system transfer to the XL, but that's never going to happen.

it's not inferior, the xl really is an equal alternative. the original 3DS has....
better picture quality. no matter how great the xl looks, it's the same resolution at blown up nearly 2x.
much better portability (40% smaller)
an arguably cooler design (shiny sparkle paint job, 3 tier color scheme)
that nice black border around the top screen. some people hated it, but just look at the difference it makes:
the xl has got the much bigger screens which may look better in terms of immersion, an undoubtedly awesome 1:1 mode for old games, better battery life, fewer distracting lights everywhere, better headphone placement, and (fingers crossed) screens that probably don't scratch the hell out of each other every time you close the system.
the xl does sound a little better overall, but the original still has a lot of things the xl doesn't. i don't think i'll ever be able to trade it in or sell it, it's just too damn cool.
@waveboy: i am really feeling for you with this new system: you seem to be all over the place about it. on one thread you are ranting against it then you appear to be rapturously in love with it. kind of a bi-polar relationship! your hyperbole is reaching new levels. (i am not being snarky; it's just that your turn of phrase often makes me shake my head wondering what decade/century it is. ).
for me, just being able to see the screen elements is the big decider. i have had to wear multi-focus glasses since i was about 11yrs old and when i play the 3Ds and look up, i can't seen anything clearly. i know the graphics won't be perfect, but at least i will be able to clearly see the imperfections. lol

Once again I'll say it, I really need to try this out at the store first. That's the deal breaker for me.
I'm torn. I mostly carry the 3DS in my pocket and play it outdoors, but I NEED a better battery life because I travel long distances on a plane. I'm not sure whether I should upgrade or not.
I don't think size is an issue if you travel long distances on a plane, you'll be carrying a backpack with you won't you? Even then, the 3DS XL is not so big it won't fit anywhere. It's just slightly larger than the original 3DS.
tom, you'd get much better battery life by buying one of nyko's batteries than you would with the xl, and it'd only cost you $20. the original system is actually thicker than the xl with nyko's packs installed, though....
i still insist we all invest in hammer pants. it's the only way to make sense of this crazy world
I have got to say, it looks good! For me, it would have some advantages, because I record footage from my 3DS with my camera to make Let's Plays. The bigger screens will improve the video quality a lot! Sadly, it's expensive and I am also planning on getting the WiiU.
