Here is a site that had hands on with the 3DS XL. They suspect that the system has clearer 3d graphics and is no longer a strain to the eyes due to a filter. Plus, they say the viewing angles are far superior. Sorry it's in Spanish. http://www.p-nintendo.com/articles/reportages/exclu-pn-...
I can't get the link to work; says that the page I requested doesn't exist (nice picture of Bowser though). If that turns out to be true, I will be even more interested in the XL.

The link doesn't work.
And that's most definitely not spanish- It's french.
OK I found a way to get to the article and get it translated. Copy the following url and paste it on google. Then click the blue "translate this page" link under the first search result (should be p-nintendo.something). It is certainly interesting, but google's translation isn't perfect.
I wasn't that interested before, but it does look pretty dang nice... it'll be hard for me to decide between my sleeker, more portable original 3DS and the possibility of such nice screens. I suppose I'll have to play it in person now and decide.

Your tiny little wrist watch 1:1 3DS Gameboy experience will be doubled in size basically forming the size of an actually gameboy screen, which i personally am really looking forward to. No more of that blown blurry upscaled 'default' junk, which I always use since the screen size replicates(although it's a teeny bit bigger) the GB/GBC screen.
Agreed, that is one of the most exciting possibilities. I currently play all my GB games in 1:1 mode because I love the frame, the 3D effect, and the classic look of those pixels. Having all of that but also nearly up to the original size would be perfect.
We wouldn't want you mega squinting at your 3DS 1:1 gameboy wrist watch screen while you tackle your precious Wario Land series muhahahaha
And I'm also in my 30s, so my ability to see tiny things is only going to decrease. My precious Wario Land is too good to suffer such a fate.
I simply don't have the money for this. Maybe later on. If they ever release the silver one in North America. I don't love the design, but those screens are very enticing.
Why is it that in that video, it doesn't look massive at all? Anyways, whoever that is, is holding it really uncomfortably by the looks of it. And why does he have the screen tilted forward. Sigh, if you're going to do a hands-on, at least do it right.
Why would they downgrade the stylus, I love the 3DS stylus.

Because telescoping was a useless annoyance that just made it harder to use the stylus.

This. I didn't realise Nintendo opted for that design just to save space, i always thought it was their way of uprading the basic stylus just to give it a more futuristic 'next gen-ish' look and feel. Yet using it for a little over a year now it seems like a useless annoyance. It's bad enough it's placed akwardly in the back of the system which makes it clumsy to pull out. And then i have to pull and extend the stylus to get it to it's normal form, meanwhile when i'm using it i always accidently push it down 'shirinking the stylus' which I'm sure we all do. Uneeded teloscopic design makes it a bit of a anti simplistic pain to use.
I don't mind the telescoping, it only takes 2 seconds. And I prefer the material of the 3DS stylus and the improved tip. Sure it's a pain reaching back for the stylus, but that's too much of a minor problem to warrant another $200 purchase.
I'm indifferent to the 3DS stylus extending. I see how it could be helpful, and I like how it feels, but it leaves some scratches on the top bit and I honestly never use the small mode, unless I need to use it quickly. I will miss the older look though.

Yeah I have no idea why he is holding it so awkwardly. Maybe so the camera guy could get as much of he could of the system rather than the guy's hands in his shots. I thought it was kind of funny that in the article the video is from (also linked on the previous page), the author calls it a laptop (at least that is what Google's translation says he called it). I'm going to assume based on the similarity of the screen's angle that the DSi XL's multiple stop hinge is returning.
Here's a translation of the page. They say it's very comfortable so I'm assuming they just did that to show off the graphics.
Hand On Nintendo 3DS XL26/06/2012
This is the IDEF, great meeting of the gaming pros at Cannes who stands from 26 to 28 July 2012 on the Nintendo booth, that the meeting took place in shock. The console was not normally worn to reporters before the Japan Expo held in Paris from July 5 to 8. But it was our secret map forget: the fluke (to be polite)!
The world's first true, will have taken place just sitting on a chair, booth Nintendo, this afternoon! The Director of Nintendo itself has left us near, and even take fifteen minutes, the beast. Because you asked nicely ... and that exceptions are obviously made to be exceeded! The idea of this meeting "unexpected", in any event, Nintendo seems to have seduced. In off, we were told that this "excluded" was a gift to PN for "services rendered for 10 years." It sends the message ... and it's always nice
Light filter image, huge screen, light ... very nice surprises!
The console, so we'll talk about without mentioning specifics. We already know all the power, size and weight of the console (see our previous article). What interests us today is to know what it is for real.
Well brace yourself: it is love at heart! First, the screen size for a laptop is amazing. Seeing is believing. The term XL is not stolen. It's really VERY VERY big and less comfortable viewing. It takes as much fun to play in 2D and 3D ... because of the sudden the 2D rendering offers great big show (in addition to offering a wide viewing angle for viewers to side). DS games will certainly take a third life. When you turn on 3D, almost unsurprisingly, one realizes that the effect is much more eloquent and pleasing to the eye. The screen is not pokey as the first model, we no longer forces the eye muscles in the same way and it's a real pleasure.
Let us add also that the 3D effect seemed more "soft", more natural. The screen technology seemed more advanced than the initial model-to-confirm. The pixels enlarged, because the screen resolution does not change, does not pose a problem because the image is quite soft. There must be a filter that rounds the pixels ... Anyway, it's all good. The games keep a suitable definition. Even if we do has an HD Smartphone or PSP like Vita, you must know that on the one hand console provides a basic rendering than the LD ... and above all it is meant to be usitée with the 3D function. Which gives a glow, a depth that does not exist on non-3D screens, whether HD or not. This leads to the conclusion that the screen is that it will not disappoint and is finally honor 3DS and 3D games in general.
The grip, second pleasant surprise, is simply excellent. The "corners" of the console does finally fall over in his hands. The seizure of the machine seems natural. Much more natural than the first version. So you wonder what Nintendo has made with the first non 3DS. If the console had really been tested in-house long ... For it goes without saying that the XL him, because of its excellent comfort, is subject to many adjustments. Fatigue will not feel so long when we play. Thanks to excellent ergonomics that supports rendering nice screen. Although the difference is very slight, the buttons seemed to us well placed and better quality than the previous model. Ditto for the stick, which seems to want bigger and better to the thumb. Anyway, how many players should feel less tense playing ... and the youngest will not hurt to acclimatize. The average size of ergonomics finally, and this is mathematical, is ideal for both large hands and small hands.
Last great surprise, the weight of the console. It is ... very light! We did not find the feeling of really heavier than the old 3DS now. Weight distribution, more spread out, also helps. But frankly, it looks really "light" for his size. A relatively large size, though rather late. The console is this long, but the thickness is very thin, very little broader. Paradoxically one approaches the philosophy of miniaturization ... A small detail that has certainly reduce weight: the coating 'deluxe plastic "imitation metal popularized recently by the latest Samsung Galaxy S3. Instead of appearing chip, this detail on the contrary strengthens the modern look of the console.
Once in hand, one wants to go with!
We realize, with the 3DS XL, the handheld will likely have a role to play in times to come. They would be able to compete with games on Smartphone, for the simple reason that there are still ideas to make you want to play on portable gaming experience that is incomparable. This does not happen maybe not ... large format consoles and more games that go with the obvious.
Anyway, after testing carefully Mario Kart 7 XL on screen, we can assure you that the games 3DS take a second breath. The game experience is really much more comfortable and festive!
Only flaw, perhaps, the sound of the speakers who did not seem of better quality than the original 3DS ... Again it will dig. We were in a noisy room when we tested the device. But probably nothing transcendental at HP. Anyway, many players will probably continue to use their headphones ...
In conclusion, and for those who doubt, the 3DS 3DS XL THE UNDERGROUND on almost every point. What a shame that Big N has not taken care of this model directly out ... And indeed having an ecological gesture in addition to having offered the best product to buyers! Because after playing on the laptop screen the largest ever made by Nintendo, it is no longer possible to backtrack. And it goes without saying that future games like Luigi Mansion 2, Castlevania or even sympathetic NSMB2 we tested, will finally be honored as they deserve.
So we can always criticize the fact that there is no second stick (even though Nintendo has never desired to provide a base for accessibility reasons and to distinguish handheld games in the lounge). You might say that the console has not made the leap to HD ... But then again we can find another argument against saying that 3D has never been so beautiful and that HD does not effect on its rendering. Quibble with the 3DS XL, is like finding fault with a hot girl: we can, but why!
"Huge screen
Better viewing angle
3D effect looks better/more effective/more natural
2D mode looks better than regular 3DS
Image looks better/softer (they assume there might be some filter but not sure)
The grip (round corners) fit nicely
Unit fits better in hands (they wonder if it should've been the main design in first place)
Unit is lighter than they expected
There's a coat in the unit (not fully matte) that gives it a "deluxe plastic imitating metal" look
While the image looked worse on a DSiXL than on a DSi, it's not the case here. 3DSXL pixels look as defined as on 3DS."
DAMN. IT. i really like the original 3DS design better, but seeing that giant screen in 3D is tempting. anyone else wondering if nintendo will make a profit on this model? it seems to me like they figured an XL edition would come eventually and decided to get it out of the way now and make their money faster.
I think it will make good money. A few users on here seem to want to trade in their old ones, and I can imagine lots of people having both. When I Swapnoted everyone on my List only one person outright denied wanting it while the others all wanted to get one at some point. Even my dad wants one and he has no 3DS games. (We're getting him one when AC is out)
