Eh, I call baloney on Iwata being disappointed with the 3DS sales. Nintendo is making on a profit on each 3DS sold and considering how mobile platforms have cut into the dedicated handheld market, the 3DS is doing great.
Changing a forecast has nothing to with the system being doomed. It just means Nintendo were too optimistic and had to lower their expectations. Nothing more, nothing less.
The 3DS is a very profitable machine for Nintendo.

Used is the problem - Nintendo should fight against it using the eshop prices. All they get from the High Street is them stocking used (And only used) at the new Amazon price.
To be honest, if Nintendo could have steam like sales on the 3DS I think a lot more people would buy them on the eShop and would have to worry very little about the used market. Of course they'll still have hasteful people like me that'll pay full-price just so they can play it day one xD.
Another thing people don't account for are people living in the same house that share games, but not 3DS'. I'm home from college and I personally own a (broke) 3DS and a Pikachul XL while my brother has a 3DS and a Pokemon XL and my sister who owns a 3DS. That's 5 3DS systems in one house, but we all share games, (except for Mario Kart, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing). So that might also be a factor.

I have literally watched as 3DS sales have increased — the amount of streetpasses I've been getting at school has increased exponentially with the release of AC:NL, and then again later with the release of Pokémon X & Y... it has reached the point at which it's not unlikely for me to get 10 streetpasses a day! ...the amount of random streetpasses I get elsewhere has increased, too.
^This in the first year I had about 300 streetpass total 50 being from a friend now I've just gone past the two year anniversary in september and have almost 1900 streetpass total minus like 300 from friends I get streetpasses almost every day from college and commuting.
I get 10 or more just by getting coffee from Starbucks.

This post gives me flashbacks of similar articles, a strange time when everyone thought the 3DS was the doom of Nintendo and would be a colossal failure. Specifically it reminds me of this IGN article, which is kind of hilarious now a days but was worry some back then. I don't even know how Iwata could be dissatisfied with the 3DS, it is almost literally printing them money haha.

That the Wii u would fail this Holiday was expected, but the 3DS...
Well, of course it did sell well but probably not as good as anyone thought despite Pokemon! Lets face it: Nintendo's golden years are over, for the time being!

So then Sony, Microsoft, and none of the other gaming companies will ever have a "golden year" again either? In spite of projections being off, which if anyone is ever surprised a projection of any sort is wrong they should learn a thing or two about reality, the 3DS continues to outsell all other systems from all companies.

Considering how much supposed competition there is with smartphones, 3DS is not supposed to be doing half as well as it has so I'm happy for that and despite having an awesome lineup of games nowadays, I still don't feel it is living up to what the successor to DS should so this all works for me. And it isn't like Wii where Nintendo had half stopped trying because they feel they won so they're still willing to find other ways to make it more successful. I think that might be preferable, consoles that dominate make the people behind them dumber and easier to fail to competition it seems.

I concur, especially with your last point, but then I am biased.

All I know is while the 3DS is selling really well it's not selling as much as Iwata wants them to. The thing is Europe and the US have a way bigger market/population than that of Japan, yet their consoles are selling more in Japan than anywhere else. This might be the reason Iwata stated that he wants to focus more on western trends because he wants more worldwide sales. Japanese sales can only take them so far.

@KittenKoder Are you a SCAR alt account? You share his trait for responding with irrelevant or out of date links
Haha. My links could be from yesterday, and you still don't think they're relevant, so perhaps @KittenKoder has more to say than you gave them credit for.
All I'm getting from that link, is that 3DS is still in the same league as DS, in terms of potential success. That's enough information to basically void the thread. 3DS oversold DS one year, and didn't the next. Big deal.
In terms of finances, this just means that Nintendo will invest more money into the 3DS, resulting in more software and features, which in turn, will hypothetically create more 3DS sales.

I had a picture in my head of their handheld department going into overclock mode when the lowered projections were revealed. There's already been threads made with people worried about the future 3DS line up that seems quite barren right now especially in comparison to last year, something tells me that will no longer be a problem.

I just don't get one thing. Why can't Nintendo just be satisfied with the stuff that are doing well like the 3DS? I'm still surprised that Iwata isn't impressed with the 3DS sales while I can understand he can be upset about the Wii U sales(Which will soon change once games start coming).

Because it isn't doing as well as DS. That's basically it.

Nintendo is a traded company with shareholders who want profit out of their investment. It's Iwata's job to make sure their investment is profitable. He shouldn't be satisfied until they're satisfied. Hence, if his sales projection fails and they have to cut it, it means less profit for investors, which means they'll blame Iwata, which means Iwata should be disappointed.
The device can be profitable and do amazingly well on the market, but that's not what it's about. It's about expectations of future profits and whether or not those expectations are reached.

But doesn't the marketing have to be blamed for this instead of Iwata?
There are probably a lot of factors to take in to account. But Iwata is the head of Nintendo after all, so if something goes wrong, he is to be blamed. You could say it's indirectly his fault.
All in all it's pretty simple though; Iwata's job is to make investors money, and he failed at doing so.
