Best Super Mario - Super Mario Bros.

Why mess with a classic? Especially when that classic sold 40.24m copies! Super Mario Bros. has been massively successful over the last 35+ years, and of course it has — it is almost entirely responsible for Nintendo's existence as a global video game company, plus helping the industry itself recover from the 1983 video game crash, and it's a cultural icon in every way possible, from the soundtrack to the instantly-recognisable World 1-1. It's also the second best-selling game on this entire list!

Worst Super Mario - New Super Luigi U

It's kinda funny that the worst-selling Mario game is... a Luigi game. It's a little bit sad that the brother in another colour can't catch a break, but, well, it's a bit of an odd one. Released as both a standalone game and as DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Luigi U is harder, faster, and more green than the game it sprung from. It only sold 3.07m copies as a result — although that's still more than Fire Emblem's best-selling game!

Best Smash Bros - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch has sold a whopping 27.4 million copies, no doubt thanks to its gigantic roster and/or that whole thing where Kirby survived a mass extinction event. Sakurai has since stepped away from the Smash series, after being forced to add every single video game character ever to Ultimate, but hopefully he can feel proud of the game he helped create.

Worst Smash Bros - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

But Sakurai might feel bad about all the effort he probably put into Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, a title so forgettable that it didn't even really have a title. Admittedly, selling 5.38 million copies is nothing to scoff at (that's practically everyone who owned a Wii U!) but even the 3DS version sold almost twice that.

Best Wario - Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

The best-selling Wario game isn't a WarioWare game (although, for reference, the best-selling WarioWare game is WarioWare: Touched! with 2.47m copies sold) — it's Wario Land, the very first game that let Wario take the spotlight. As a spin-off of the Super Mario series, Wario Land is a platformer that stars the stinky garlic-man, and we have its popularity to thank for all the later Wario games, too. Thanks, Wario Land! Waaa!

Worst Wario - Game & Wario

Game & Wario on the Wii U was a sort-of WarioWare game, which offered 16 minigames designed around the Wii U's GamePad. A bit like what 1-2-Switch was for the Switch, Game & Wario was a cool tech demo that really shouldn't have been a standalone game, and as a result, it only sold 0.25m copies.

Best Zelda - Breath of the Wild

It's a little tricky to figure out exactly what counts as a Zelda game — do the Hyrule Warriors games count? How about Cadence of Hyrule? — but no matter what, one game comes out on top: The fantastic, unbeatable Breath of the Wild, a game that literally sold millions of Nintendo Switches (and 25.8m copies, too). What a launch game this was! Will the sequel match up to these lofty heights?

Worst Zelda - Freshly-Picked: Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland

Like we said, it's hard to know what counts as a Zelda game, and technically if we're just going by "has the words Legend and Zelda in the title, and isn't a remake" then the worst-selling Zelda game is Tri Force Heroes. But that's boring and predictable, so instead we're going with Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, which sold just 0.234m in Japan (no other figures available). We would still guess that this game helped launch Tingle as the cult favourite character he is today.
