October was yet another cracking month for eShop gems, with plenty of new games to choose from that are worthy of your time.
These awards aim to celebrate the best of Nintendo's digital store, giving some love and attention to the games that could so easily be missed in the Switch's ever-growing library.
So, let's get started. Here are the best Switch eShop games of October 2021!
Honourable Mentions:
While these titles didn't quite make our top three this month, they're still certainly worth checking out:
- Gleylancer | Review: 9/10
- Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water | Review: 8/10
- Dungeon Encounters | Review: 8/10
- Evertried | Review: 8/10
- Crysis Remastered Trilogy | Review: 8/10
- The Good Life | Review: 7/10
- Gang Beasts | Review: 7/10
- Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan | Review: 7/10
3. Dusk (Switch eShop)
In third place this month we have Dusk, an incredible port of 2018's Quake-inspired shooter.
It came up against some pretty strong competition this month, but in our review, we said that Dusk is "one hell of an impressive piece of software and possibly the single best Unity port to Switch we've ever seen." Needless to say, if you're into your old school shooters and wish there were more games out there that were as good as Quake, get this downloaded and you're guaranteed to have a good time.
2. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (Switch eShop)
Moving up into second we have Disco Elysium: The Final Cut which, along with our first-place finisher below, absolutely gobbled up the staff votes this month.
With some of the best writing ever seen in a video game, a great choice-driven narrative featuring wonderful dialogue, and boasting an impressively high replay value, this RPG is not to be missed. We described it as "an absolute triumph" in our review, praising it for being a truly unique gaming experience – which is pretty hard to come by these days.
This is one of the best RPGs available on Switch, so what are you waiting for?
1. Tetris Effect: Connected (Switch eShop)
If Disco Elysium gobbled up votes, Tetris Effect: Connected devoured them.
Yes, taking first place this month, Tetris Effect: Connected is perhaps the best iteration of one of the most iconic video games of all time. While some will say that the VR versions of Tetris Effect are where it's at, the Switch version's portability makes this port equally as essential in our eyes, letting you take the best version of Tetris with you wherever you go.
It's hard not to love Tetris, and the NL team really loves Tetris Effect: Connected. Go on, treat yourself.

< Nintendo Life eShop Selects - September 2021
How we decide our eShop Selects top three: As we reach the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favourite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.
Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then tallied to create a top three list, with the overall winner taking that month's top prize.

I'm enjoying Voice of Cards. It really fits my play style these days and I can enjoy it while on my lunch since it can be played 100% touch screen.
Tetris Effect is pretty good but I think Voice of Cards is my favourite. It's pretty short and simple/easy but it's still a fun JRPG while it lasts and the presentation is great. I want to play Disco Elysium at some point but I'm holding off for the physical release.
Gleylancer is excellent the work they have put in is superb all retro rereleases should have this much effort put into them I got it on offer as well
From this list specifically, I would say Tetris Effect is my top pick for last month. But I still really enjoyed my time with Crysis 2/3 which is pretty impressive performance-wise on Switch. I'm guessing my 3rd would be Fatal Frame and Dusk at 4th considering my little play time with those games. I'll be trying out Greylancer and maybe Voice of Cards at some point.
I would get Disco Elysium, even if it was on Steam sales, if the performance was better. Dusk and Tetris are amazing though!
I’m holding out for a sale on both Disco Elysium (/patches) and Tetris Effect, but I’ve no doubt it’s just a matter of time until I get them.
oh please. i bought disco elysium but it's so boooooooooring
Dungeon Encounters is the most underrated game on the eshop. Fight me.
I went for 5 on there including Tetris Effect and Disco Elysium and 3 of the honourable mentions. There are a couple on thw wishlist too. Tetris Effect the pick
Tetris Effect's soundtrack is simply incredible. Just saying.

It was a great month for the eShop with gems like The Good Life, Fatal Frame 5, Gleylancer and Voice of Cards.
However, my favourite was rRootage Reloaded, which NintendoLife sadly has not reported on at all so far. It's a really cool minimalist shmup with game modes based on Ikaruga, Psyvariar and Giga Wing.
If I had to pick a single game that came out last month that I think would most appeal to typical Nintendo fans, it would be Monomals. Unfortunately, it seems to be getting completely overlooked by pretty much everybody.
@Ironcore I'm playing Dungeon Encounters right now and it's one of the best jrpgs of the last few years. A lot of people might be put off by the graphics, but the gameplay is top notch. Simplicity is power.
Disco Elysium is the most pretentious game I've played in some time. It's politics are shallow as hell, which ultimately belies the pseudo-intellectualism that can't quite mask the game's lack of substance and nuance. Hope you like boring side quests, because this game has tons of those lol. What dreck.
@mytrixx Absolutely. I think a lot of people are put off by its simplicity not realising how complex and brutal it gets later on.
Commenting here because there are a few games I wouldn't mind coming back to.
Just waiting to see if Dungeon Encounters and Voice of Cards get sales later this month and buying both either way.
Not a new game but my favorite game I played was ori and the will of the wisps
Happy so many voted for Disco Elysium. Those devs need every praise there is. Just such a shining gem in the library. And hopefully their motivation to fix some bugs might be bigger now, but I'm all good;
@BananaMetallurgica Absolutely! I’ve never heard so many accolades for a game that is so unbelievably slow and boring to play.
@BananaMetallurgica I hear you bro. I bought it for PS4 because everyone was raving about it and the scores were through the roof. A very slow and boring game. I just don't get the appeal at all. I feel the same way about Animal Crossing on Switch.
Road 96, Control (demo), Guardians of the galaxy (demo)
