The recent Super Mario Maker 2 Direct presentation earlier this week bombarded us with a stack of new information about the upcoming Switch release, within the space of 17-minutes.
While Nintendo has made it clear the game will support 4-player online and local wireless multiplayer, the press release doesn't clarify if you'll be able to play the game alongside your friends and family on a single Switch unit. We know you can create levels with one other person in co-op making, but whether you can actually play them together is currently unknown.
Fortunately, it seems incredibly likely you will be able to do this after the eagle-eyed experts over at GameXplain noticed the official eShop listing references multiplayer three separate times in the Super Mario Maker 2 software details section. This covers the number of players for online play (1-4), local wireless play (1-4) and then one simply noting the "number of players" (1-4) – which is presumably the number of people who can play the game on a single system.
It seems even more likely when this eShop page is compared to the Splatoon 2 listing, referencing one to four players for online and local wireless play, and catering to just one player on a single Switch. If you're still not convinced, there was a segment during the latest Direct presentation, where you can see Mario and Luigi moving through clear pipes together. Noticeably the screen keeps both players in the frame and there's no edit button in the shot – suggesting this is more than a building test.
Do you think we'll be able to create and play with others on the same Switch when Super Mario Maker 2 arrives next month? Tell us below.

This is great news!
Imagine that, all the children were throwing hissy fits for no good reason.. It's almost like Nintendo has more information to reveal at E3!
Weird how that works...
just hoping you can play as the other 3 characters (mostly Toadette) in single player
Any Amiibo support/compatibility?
Wow this is great news! It's getting better and better. I want this now.
I can't say how excited I am for this game! Looks set to be GOTY!
This is going to be so good!
This game keeps getting better and better by the minute. At this rate it's gonna be one of the best sellers on Switch for sure.
Didn't you see the direct? It was in there as well.
This game is definitely GOTY for me
What about Amiibo support? Could you imagine 4-player as any 4 Amiibo characters?
I really hope so, was planning on getting this to play with my 5yr old daughter who loves Mario. Planning on making courses for her to train her up to be a Mario legend like her dad lol 😄
I'm annoyed that it has to be some mystery whether the game has it or not. I was looking forward to this feature only to be disappointed with the direct seemingly deconfirming it. And even now it's still only speculative, for all we know it could be for some mode they haven't shown off yet, or story mode, or even local 4 players building only. Come on now Nintendo, this is something that could motivate people to buy the game... and we could be setting ourselves up for disappointment again.
Only reason I can see for them hiding it is so people still buy NSMBU.
game uk has the limited edition for pre order at 55 pounds
@1UP_MARIO Not really a great price. I've preordered it from The Base for £40!
@1UP_MARIO Oh wait, apologies, just realised you said the limited version.
Personally the additional 12 month online membership doesn't sell the limited version for me. Me and 7 of my mates are part of the Switch Online Family group, we divided the costs amongst us and are only paying £4.
But that stylus looks sweet though...
@YagaMaki yeah they do sell it everywhere for 39.99. I also got the family sub to cover my family and friends. The limited I wanted was for the steelbook and all the other goodies. The 12 months free membership I will gift away.
I hope so! It's one of the features I want since I much prefer playing with people in the same room versus playing with people I don't know online.
If that's for real - that'll be the perfect title for me.
@RadioHedgeFund I imagine like Yoshi's Crafted World there will be very little Amiibo support. It does seem like Nintendo are winding down to the end of the craze now. Once all Smash amiibo are out that will be it I think.
Rather than speculate, wouldn't it have been easier to just email NOA's or NOE's PR department and confirm your suspicions? Right now, it can go either way. I'm sure that they're eager to get as much info out there as possible to get people excited for the game.
Not just game of the year, game of the decade or century! Mario Maker 2 is going to lay waste to all other games! Yeah, they definitely had to get New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe out the door before this game. You'll pretty much be able to build that entire game inside this game, which is awesome.
I'm still hoping for a Mario Paint style music maker within the game. Maybe they could patch it in later as an update, or DLC. Actually, please no DLC! Just normal updates like with Arms.
I can't frigging wait for this game!
They should be clearer about this. That should have been a main selling point to support their slogan of play anywhere, anytime with anyone.
If I had known Splatoon 2 didn’t support local multiplayer I would never have purchased it. I didn’t check because, why wouldn’t it? The main desire was to play against my kids. Yes it’s fun to play strangers online but I was hoping it could be a family experience.
i hope this is correct! getting it either way but this would be the cherry on top!
@Nookingtons I would say holding some back for closer to the launch date, that could go with E3 but doesn't have to. There is time in the couple of weeks after E3, too. Though, it sure would be tempting during the Treehouse sessions to show off a couple features not mentioned yet.
Oh yeah, or some new things could be revealed to make an extra splash at the invitational Mario Maker competition thing before E3 as well. Saving at least one surprise for that seems like a good idea.
Let's hope so! If they want my money, it needs to be included!
But is Waluigi a playable character?
It also says so on the Japanese Nintendo website that there is 1-4 players in TV and Tabletop mode.
@Claytonbob Really offtopic, but Splatoon 2 has local multiplayer.
I'd wait for an official confirmation, but I'm excited if true.
@sanderev. I meant split screen. My kids are too young to buy them their own switch and copy of the game.
Heck yes. This is exactly what I wanted!
@Rika_Yoshitake for some reason you got a lot of dislikes. Let em cry. Bedwetters.
With the large story mode, this looks like it could be the ULTIMATE 2D Mario game.
The ONE thing I still want is the ability to create your own complete Mario game, linking your levels together with an OVERWORLD MAP.
If they include that feature, it will be PERFECT.
I agree with the sentiment of a world builder. I'd really love to be able to build my own game. I don't need to be able to make cut scenes or explain a story. But I'd love to be able to make something that gets progressively more challenging and creative.
I seriously think they're wrong here. In the direct they've shown us local co-op building levels. There's no reason at all to assume the local co-op referred to on the website is anything more than that. I hope I'm proven wrong though since I'd love some local action.
I really hope this is the case.
If this game doesn’t have a local multiplayer mode that rips of Ultimate Chicken Horse wholesale, Nintendo have no idea what they’re doing.
