The characters of Pokémon Sword and Shield may well have arrived a little too late to be included in the Detective Pikachu movie, but that doesn't mean that we can't see how they might have looked.
RJ Palmer, a Ubisoft artist who was discovered online and asked to work on the Detective Pikachu movie, has now created realistic drawings of both Grookey and Scorbunny. These pieces follow his previous mock-up of the water-type Sobble which we featured on the site just a couple of months ago.
Naturally, we'd urge you to check out Palmer's DeviantArt page which features plenty more great Pokémon designs, too. Before you go, though, you can see how the Grookey piece was formed in this time-lapse video below.
Truly amazing stuff, we're sure you'll agree. Perhaps these could appear in a potential Detective Pikachu 2?

@Heavyarms55 Let other people like things. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it can't exist. My day is better because I saw this.
I actually hate Grookey's design in the game, but I looove the this perspective. It makes me understand the direction of the game design a little more.
@Heavyarms55 I am a die-hard 2D animation fan, but I still think there's room for 3D animation to exist. if you want new 2D animation, Nick, Disney Channel and CN have you covered.
@Heavyarms55
"Hollywood is on a bloody crusade to destroy 2D animation and I hate it!"
I know, I said the same thing when they destroyed 1D animation. I thought it was quite good, even though it lacked depth.
I'm glad they don't acually look like that because if they did i would fill guilty for keeping them in a Pokeball.
Those are so cute! I would so buy the new Pokémon if they looked like this.
I do find the rant comment interesting considering if you watch the video this is 2D hand drawn and then painted. Did I miss the 3D model because realistic inspired 2D is still a valid branch of 2D. Scifi has been using it forever.
@Heavyarms55 This guy has been doing these for a long time before detective pikachu was even a thing, looks like they've been doing these different style ones since 2012. They definitely can be nightmare fuel for some of them, but still pretty interesting takes on what the mons would look like in real life.
2D Animation will never die. Don't get me wrong I love me these 3D renderings and I actually don't want a Detective Pikachu sequel. I would rather have a Mewtwo Origin. Where our evil protagonist is made, then he manipulates people into coming up with Gyms, the Elite 4 and when he has enough info on the strongest trainers and Pokemon he invites them to his a secret competition to steal there powers. Basically mashing up Gen 1 and the first pokemon movie with an end credit scene showing Detective Goodman finding him and asking for help to uncover Ryme city mystery.
Screw Hollywood. Now I want to see BBC's Pokémon, narrated by David Attenborough.
that time lapse video gave me motion sickness
Funny that you used the word “complete” when only one is missing.
That rabbit belongs in a horror film. I'm glad I never got to see this as a kid.
@panthro Technically, 2D animation lacks depth too a-
Oh, nevermind.
@clvr I suspect the word was used in reference to the artist previous drawing of Sobble, thus completing his interpretation of the S&S starters.
I think these are miles better than the Sobble effort. I would love to see him retry that one in a different manner.
There's another guy on Instagram (can't remember the username at the moment) who does some really good work on realistic Pokémon art. But he also couples it with fictitious anecdotes about the Pokémon and their zoology. It's really fun and adds some really cool head canon to Pokémon lore.
Welp, looks like Heavyarm just up and poofed out of existence.
Anyway, I think this looks very good, and Grookey looks even better than the in-game version!
Great 2D digital painting here. My first impression was that there was a 3D model underneath, but nope.
I can't quite accept Scorbunny without the face "patch" between the eyes, though. I think the interpretation is that it is just the nose bride, but it feels way to prominent to me to just relegate it to such a small space.
Tbh I would've been fine with more cartoonish looking CG Pokemon in Detective Pikachu.
These are much, MUCH better than the Sobble interpretation awhile back. I still prefer the official 2D art overall, but these are still pretty cool.
Tfw they don’t add Sobble in this article. Very sad...
Detective pikachu Easter eggs
@UmbreonsPapa well, thank you for pointing it out! it was very sloppy of me not to notice that, and now I feel stupid lol
I agree these look better, though 👍🏻
The rabbit looks creepy.
Yeah lets forget fantasy/cartoon designs and make everything as darn creepy, ugly as we can.
seeing stuff like this really makes me glad we didn't get the original idea for Pokemon, of collecting insects, tho this guy and Hollywood are more then making up for it
ENOUGH WITH THE REALISTIC...ANYTHING NINTENDO-RELATED!!!
Especially Grookey looks cool!
