Back in 2015, there were reports from the Wall Street Journal suggesting a live-action Netflix series based on The Legend of Zelda was in the works. This project was still in the early stages of development at the time and was aiming to be Game of Thrones for a family audience.
While nothing seemingly came of this in the end, a similar but different rumour has now surfaced via news and entertainment website The Wrap. According to the source, Producer Adi Shankar is allegedly in talks to produce a series about The Legend of Zelda. There's no word on how exactly the website has narrowed it down to this series, as Shankar's recent Instagram post reveals he's "working" with an iconic Japanese video game company but makes no mention of the game series:
I can confirm that I am working with an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series.
Shankar's post goes on to explain how he will announce what the series is next month on 16th November. When the source reached out to Nintendo for comment, a spokesperson for the Japanese company had nothing to say about the topic.
If this does end up being something Zelda or Nintendo related, fear not - Shankar has very much proven himself in recent times as the Executive Producer on Netflix's animated Castlevania series. Whether this latest report citing The Legend of Zelda is linked to the original 2015 live-action Netflix rumours is unknown at this point in time.
Would you like this announcement to be for a Nintendo or Zelda-themed series? What do you think of Shankar's work on the Castlevania Netflix series? Tell us below.

Please don't do it.
Won’t get my hopes up, after all nothing came from the last rumors 3 years ago.
Then again... maybe that would be good? I love Zelda but it’d be a hard franchise to adapt to television and there’s not a good track record for such adaptations. I’m curious to see a live action Zelda, but like... it’s more of a morbid curiosity. Like how awful can they mess it up?
Omg, I'm beyond excitement, hope is true, I think is true!!
I don't know how to feel about this one, but I guess it is pretty easy to ignore if it doesn't turn out well.
"I can confirm that I am working with an iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series."
Is too clear, They say "iconic Japanese gaming company" = Nintendo and "iconic video game series" = The Legend of Zelda... Im so happy!!
I liked CastleVania season 1 and I'm enjoying season 2 so far, but to be honest I'd rather see Shankar make a Metroid series than Zelda.
But why Zelda? There are not only a bunch of "iconic japanese companies" but also a hand full of Nintendo's titles.
Is this going to be like the "R-rated" Power Rangers series that he also claimed he's working on? I feel like half of the stuff he teases about just never materializes.
@solcross well, trying to do something is a bit different then actually being able to do so. Especially when it comes to Nintendo's protectiveness of their ips. Though I would rather have someone attempting a loz anime more then a Mario anime tbh. He most likely has a lot of stuff he's trying to be able to do But is being held back from being able to do so and puts his goals out so as to rake up support for them in hopes that they become a popular enough of a topic to make the ip holders and his higher ups to see the profit to be made from supporting his endeavors
I can't imagine a show with a silent protagonist will work very well, and if Link talks the internet will implode. I'd much rather see a slickly animated Metroid series. Space is such a rich vein of possibilities. She could end up anywhere fighting anything.
Could be anything. Could be a "Travis" anime. Iconic Japanese we think Nintendo in the west but in japan it could mean anything, could even be a new Sonic Series.
@The_Mysteron Link doesn't have to be part of a TV series / movie.
The Castlevania series is awesome. So I would welcome a well-produced animated Legend of Zelda series.
For the love of god can someone PLEASE explain to me why the crappy Netflix Castlevania series seems to receive near universal praise??
All I can see is an extremely average and dull show with bland characters and VERY sub-par animation. Honestly the animation is so bad that I nearly turned off after the first ten seconds and it doesn't improve. Someone please tell me why this show is considered good??
If this guy goes anywhere near Zelda with the same guttertrash standards then we're in for a very rough time indeed.
NOT LIVE ACTION Anything but live action. Please!
Well the Castlevania show is actually pretty good, but I'm not sure it's quite good enough to do a Zelda show full justice at that level of quality. He'll need to get in much better voice actors and improve some of the drawing and animations a bit to truly deliver something that's of the standard I would want from a proper Zelda animated show.
Could be PlayStation and crash anime? Lol ... I hope not either way I thought castlevania series was trash
@Mogster your right dood
Castlevania wasn't good. Please don't.
While I have the confidence this could be pulled off, live or animated, my biggest burning question is how Link will be portrayed. Will he be a mute, and it'll be explained why? Will Link talk? Etc. This alone will give me better insight to the dynamic, cause the lore of the Zelda sells itself.
But this dosen't even mention Zelda.... " iconic Japanese gaming company to adapt one of their iconic video game series into a series." that could mean any iconic Japanese game series, there's so many it be.
Didn't finished Castlevania season 2 yet, but I enjoyed it, wasn't perfect, had a lot of flaws, but eh, it was still kinda nice to see Castlevania as a cartoon
The guy already said that he wanted to work on Metroid and Zelda before, and we are not even sure he is working on a Nintendo IP, but if he is, it could be Zelda or Metroid.
I wouldn't have any objection against any of these, even if the final product is not that great, it still something that the whole franchise could benefit, especially Metroid
I don't really understand the "game of thrones but for family" thing, but the guy looked like he knows what Metroid is about, loneliness, exploration etc ... so why not after all
Great news if it turns out to be true. Castlevania was fantastic. Would have loved to see him do the same thing with Dark Souls though.
Shankar: I would love to make a Metroid show.
Obviously his first choice of a Nintendo property would have to be Zelda. That's logic 😊
Would love to see them try. Never understood why people chalk the series as being unadaptable to other mediums. I would think as lore heavy as Zelda is (timeline debate aside), there’s tons of material to mine from
And it would be pretty silly if Link is mute. With the thousands of voice actors out there, I’m sure they can find someone to voice Link and voice him well
I want a live action series of Zelda, Fire Emblem (that one should br "Game of Thrones" ) and Metroid Live Action, Mario and DK animated and Star Fox...
I'd love to see this animated, but I will say I didn't care for the Castlevania series. The voice acting was really bad and whispery all the time-- it sounded like they didn't bother hiring any actual voice actors, so everything was hard to hear and underacted.
God help me i hope they don't screw th pooch like they did on the original
I got an idea.....list voice actors you would like to play which characters
Pig Ganon: Powers Booth
Gannondorf: Michael Ironside
Twilight Pincess Impa: CCH Pounder
Zelda: Dana Delaney
Sahasrala: Scott Rummell
Link: Michael Rosenbaum
misc. males: Frank Welker
misc. females: Maria Canels-Barrera
@UmbreonsPapa I think the issue is with adapting existing games. I'm not sure they can capture the magic of Ocarina Of Time for example the same way the game did IMO. I actually hope they go for an original story alluded in the lore like a prequel to Breath of the Wild or something Link did after Termina for example.
As for the voice acting I could go either way really, it would be interesting if Link was mute and used sign language though that might be complicated to animate (I hope it's animated and not live action). I don't think there's a lot of heroes in media that have a physical disability.
@kopaka I would have thought an Anime based on Metroid would have been a much better fit. I’d be all over that.
@UmbreonsPapa
people have such a tremendously high standard for Zelda and Metroid, anything short of a top notch (like millions dollars per major actor) cast and production fx companies like ILM (with a Star Wars budget) and a majorly over paid awesome director familiar with each type of movie will do, like Peter Jackson for a Zelda type movie and Michael Bay for a Metroid like movie, otherwise people will be so brought down by their own over expectations, it would probably hurt the game series big
I'll reserve judgment until A. The series in question is fully announced, and B. I can watch it and judge it for myself.
I want a talking Link.
@LUIGITORNADO
get off your but then, look at post number #34 then make some suggestions of your own
@jhewitt3476 i want a talking Link!!
@LUIGITORNADO
like i said, make some suggestions for who you would like to hear the voice of Link to be, my post (#34) listed several actors I think could pull off some characters
think of some movies and tv shows youve seen, think of what you would like Link to look like (and his persona) in an animated show and figure out the best combination (Just anything but the frivolous, smartass prankster they made him in the original tv series)
don't wish for a talking Link.....Make Him Talk !!!
@macalao914 First, I too would like to see it animated. Only for the simple.fact you can accurately visualize a fully breathing Hyrule and not have to worry about money (or lack thereof) for visual effects in regards to live action.
I also agree with you on the plot. And that's kind of been my stance on video game adaptations all along. I'd rather screenwriters try their hand at an original story that may or may not fit into the existing canon. And if it doesn't, then it has to at least adhere to the rules and elements that make that franchise what it is. No taking your own liberty ala the Super Mario Bros movie that makes the movie almost unrecognizable from its source material.
As for a voice, I was gonna say I like the voice of Robin on Teen Titans Go! and how it reminded me of Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia. Though thinking about it now, it just might be the same guy doing both. But back to Link, a slightly deeper version of that voice would be my ideal for adult Link. If a movie featured Kid Link, I'd have to come back to that one. But that would be an interesting discussion to have. I'm sure we all have heard a voice actor at one point and thought they would be perfect for XYZ character
@jhewitt3476 I would have never thought of CCH Pounder for Impa's voice. I kinda imagined her voice as being a bit more playful or mischievous. Though I would love to hear her voice in a Zelda movie somewhere. Maybe Telma or a like character or one of the Great Fairies?
I do like your choice for Ganondorf. I'd throw Jeremy Irons name into the ring for it as well.
@UmbreonsPapa I put that specific person for impa because I have known CCH Pounder to show a lighter side, but for the most part, Twilight Princess Impa is Zelda's personal guard and trainer of all the guards in the castle, she is a brusk and serious woman of both physical, but mental power too, i have seen Pounder play that type of role many times very well, and I love Jeremy Irons, and though he does have a tenor to his voice that gives him a gravelly tone, his English refinement still always comes through, even when he gets angry, I would be very confused hearing Alfred Pennyworth ordering Zelda's capture and my death, but had the right idea for sure
also think you're right about Robin, Scott Menville would make a great choice
I like the Telma addition, but for the life of me i can't thi.k who would do her right, what do you suggest ???
@jhewitt3476 Hold on a second. I realize I’m having a serious brain fart today. It just dawned on me that you mentioned Impa. For whatever reason, my thoughts got scrambled and I thought I was reading Midna. Sorry for the misread, lol. But it’s all making sense and yes, I absolutely would recommend CCH Pounder for Impa. That’s actually a perfect choice.
@UmbreonsPapa
I'd still like to hear a voice idea for Telma, I'm totally drawing a blank
unfortunately not a whole lot of female voice actors like there should be , so I'm having a hard time figuring who could do a Telma type character
@jhewitt3476 I did always imagine her having a bit of a southern drawl to her voice. But with definite command and attitude. The only actress I can think of, who I think is from the south and has a drawl that comes through now and again, is Kathy Bates. I’ve seen her do commanding and playful. But again, I’m sure I’ll be watching something random and would hear the perfect voice for Telma.
@UmbreonsPapa
Hmm...a suthun' drawl you say, Kathy Bates, a Memphis girl ???, well now you got me on my way to YouTube to check that out, damn, LOL
@Tsurii I thought I was the only one that thought that. In fact, 'incredibly average' is more praise than I would give it. I thought it was horrible-- lots of blood and swearing doesn't make a series good.
Well Castlevania is AMAZING! I actually teared up at the end of season 2....
But I would like him to takle a different series, like metroid, parasite eve, or other games that I feel have that action based story telling with a darker tone.
Don't get me wrong, Zelda is dark, but not the way Castlevania was.... And the cussing with gore would feel way outta place for Zelda
I feel Zelda would do better with studio Ghibli who capture environment and bueaty in nature.
@jhewitt3476 You don't make a lick of sense.
@LUIGITORNADO
it was simple, you want a talking Link, what voice actor do you think you would like to hear as the voice of Link (in game or in a show) ???
I have to admit: I'd watch it.
Even if it was Philips CDI quality.
Link: The Faces of Evil: A Netflix Original Series
It's Devil May Cry everyone.
Ill end my self if this gets added/
