The developer Niantic wasn’t exactly a household name until it released the insanely popular smartphone hit, Pokémon GO, in partnership with The Pokémon Company. Since then, the American-based developer has been able to secure the rights to work with other big-name IP such as Harry Potter. Now, falling back on its first augmented reality game, Ingress, Niantic will delve into the world of anime with the assistance of Fuji TV and animation studio, Crafter.
Arriving on Netflix this October, Ingress: The Animation will tell the story about a universe where exotic matter leaking through portals is giving people psychic abilities. The focus will be on Makoto and Sarah - two people who have been impacted by the events and drawn into faction battles. The character designs will be done by Takeshi Honda (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and directed by CG artist, Yuhei Sakuragi.
The anime will overlap the upcoming release, Ingress Prime, with the video game expected to launch alongside it in October. Ingress Prime is described as a rework of the original game built on lessons learned from Pokémon GO. Niantic's aim is to make the smartphone title accessible to wider audiences.

Gotta watch em all!
Wow, surprised by this!
I used to play Ingress years ago before GO, and there is a lot of heavy sci-fi story to it that I just couldn't follow.
Great fun though. I'll give this a watch.
Incoming mediocrity
This is apparently a thing.
As an active Ingress player at the time, when I heard Niantic had gotten the Pokemon licence I knew it would be huge.
The several hundred players all chatting and getting along at my local park earlier for community day is a testament to their work.
May be worth checking out. I’m more excited for Castlevania this Rocktober.
I can’t wait for the Pokemon Go anime where the entire plot is a bunch of teenagers playing Pokemon Go on their phones.
not sure what to make with this. glad to see a series out of it though.
The character designs for Neon Genesis Evangelion were probably one of the weaker aspects of an otherwise incredible show so hardly a glowing endorsement. Also unless a video game tie-in anime is adapting a VN it's usually mediocre at best.
Well, I would probably give it a chance. If I still have Netflix then. The rumors about Netflix losing the rights to the Marvel shows has me concerned.
The picture makes me think about Psycho Pass
But the difference is that Psycho Pass was great, this doesn't look great ... Animes adapted from games aren't usually good
Would they finally consider letting us have a Netflix app on switch, then?
Maybe they should worry about making Pokémon Go playable. Their servers are way too buggy and unstable.
I know Zoids was based on a line of toys, but it still turned out to be a pretty good anime so this Ingress anime has a chance to be alright, too. Then again, people do love giant robots, no matter the media.
Ooo Niantic moving up in the world. They have now reached GungHo Online (Puzzle and Dragons) status.
Ingress - Enlightened vs Resistance. Well maybe the anime will be able to enlighten us about what this game was supposed to be about, not how it turned out. Hopefully the films won't be as toxic as the player-community!
