Johnny Turbo's Arcade returns next week with another beloved Data East classic up for grabs on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Johnny Turbo's Arcade: Sly Spy drops into service on 3rd May (priced $6.99 in the US), bringing along nine levels of playful variety that wooed arcade goers and those who were lucky enough to pick up Ocean's home computer conversions back in 1989.
In the year of 19XX, President Ronnie was having a nice stroll with his family when his caravan was intercepted by the Council for World Domination, a bunch of jet pack-wearing terrorists! Only one man can possibly be up for this task: the spy named Sly! Are you a bad enough secret agent to rescue the president?
The game features a 'Golden Gun', a boss possessing inhuman strength and another of diminutive stature that attacks by throwing his hat around. We can't quite figure why all of this sounds terribly familiar...

One of my favorite games going to arcades as a kid. Day one for me!
President Ronnie is really having a bad term...
All those make these little Data East GameBoy-shaped arcade machines quite obsolete if one owns a Switch.
First game I ever completed in the arcade.
Looks pretty retro-fun.
Although the gameplay looks somewhat repetitive, love the 80s feel...and the voice acting is great .....“Sly Spy”, lol
One of my favourite games on Commodore 64, this will probably be the first retro game I buy for Switch.
I hope Midnight Resistance is next.
I don't remember this one. I'd play it though when I get the chance. President Ronnie didn't want to re-enlist the Bad Dudes again?
A top pick from the Data East lineup!!! Day 1 👍
Where the hell is the James Bond license?! Get onto acquiring it, Nintendo...
Can't wait to play this one.
I loved this game back in the day, used to play the C64 version all the time, it was a pretty decent conversion.
Day 1 pick-up for me.
You've got to feel sorry for the Bad Dudes. After everything they went through to save President Ronnie, they get tossed some burgers and dismissed the next time he needs help.
Sly Spy has a bit of everything going on, parachute jumping ,running and gunning , beating upping ,motorbike riding ,shark swimming Never played it before but I soon will, day one!
Bought a PCB of this a few weeks ago, will gladly buy it on Switch, it's sooooo good.
I used to love this game in the arcade. Then I played it on MAME one day and gave myself unlimited credits...you can beat the game in like an hour. But it sure was unique for its time.
Day one for me. Loved playing this in the Arcade
I wonder if we will get the Arcade Robocop? Not sure if anyone owns the rights to that
Yes!!! Love this game. Was actually quite relieved with how the Johnny Turbo release of BAD DUDES... turned out in the end and will buy this one too. All hail DATA EAST!
@Gerald That is the one we all hoped for, but I am sure licensing issues means that it will never happen... =
I've never heard of this but I'm highly interested in now.
Awesome, Caveman Ninja might come some day.
Diminutive? Actual Odd Job was apparently 5'10" but 220 pounds or so. And he was a competitive weightlifter and pro wrestler. Not-Quite Odd Job in the game is meant to look like Data East character Karnov and is bigger than the knock-off James Bond that is the star off the show. It's like the Odd Job in GoldenEye on N64 is the little guy from Fantasy Island pretending to be Odd Job.
edit:
@shiryu don't take my post too seriously. It's not meant that way.
Day 1 for me. You can never have enough arcade games!!
It looks like so much fun! Cant wait to play it!
This looks AWESOME! I don't remember this game at all growing up, cannot wait to give it a shot next week
I never actually played this, and I don't know why, because I knew about it back in 1990. Will buy.
@AcridSkull
"I hope Midnight Resistance is next."
Oh this. This +1000000.
I didn't even know about this game, which is only natural, because I have a lot to learn. Seems fun, but the review of Bad Dudes wasn't all that good in terms of emulation and setting options. These Johnny Turbo titles are not Hamster, in other words.
First I've heard of this game.
I don't like that you have to kill the attack dogs though.
i spy a game i wont be getting
I feel obliged to remind Johnny Turbo about Ring King. And Karnov. And Atomic Runner. Oh and if licencing allows, Robocop and Captain America / Avengers.
I get that this takes place well before 9/11, but what the heck happened to our border security to allow this level of infiltration by foreign terrorists?! Was the coast guard napping when they sailed that huge warship into American waters?! Also, why isn't the National Guard performing any kind of backup?!
