There's no getting around it, Stardew Valley remains a huge hit on Nintendo Switch and continues to perform well in the eShops, and Chucklefish - the publisher behind the game - is hoping to replicate that success with its next game. A wizard school simulator with added exploration and a splash of dating. Cast your eyes on Spellbound.
The British publisher is also a developer, and it's hoping Spellbound could potentially replicate the success of ConcernedApe's indie darling on PC and consoles. Talking of formats, there's also the potential for the game to magic up a port on Switch. In a recent interview with Red Bull, founder Finn Brice hinted that Nintendo's handheld could well see a version of the game in future: "We're all massive fans of the Switch at Chucklefish," he says. "And would ideally see all of our major projects hitting the platform in the future."
What do you guys make of Spellbound? The developer cites Harry Potter and Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld as inspirations, so would you enroll in a few classes of transfiguration? Let us know below...

Insta buy!
So the news is... nothing?
Huh, looks a bit like Earthbound. Ahh, Spellbound, I get it.
For a town made of sorcerers it looks like garbage. In that the town isn't MADE from the magic they're supposed to be so good at. This is my biggest beef with magic worlds. It's all basic human aesthetic and technology. Live and breathe the magic and build your technologies around it if it's that damned prevalent. Fools.
Haha, that's clearly a nod towards Little Witch Academia with Lotte and Akko and... maybe Sucy, too(?) in the second screenshot.
Really hyped for this.
If they're announcing a new game then that means Wargroove is hopefully nearly finished.
@noobish_hat
My thoughts exactly.
As far as I'm aware, Chucklefish only published and provided technical support for the console versions of Stardew Valley. The PC version is otherwise entirely developed by one guy without Chucklefish.
I might be mistaken.
Chucklefish are also known for Starbound, and I think something else but I don't remember.
And ye shall hear of [Switch ports] and rumours of [Switch ports]: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

@DarkCojiro This game was announced back in September 2017 though, the news here is basically only that Chucklefish likes the Switch.
This looks decidedly more generic than Stardew... Granted, ConcernedApe didn't develop this.
Unless they produced springtime for hitler and germany, no one cares about producers
Everyone says they're a fan, but I see very little real commitment to putting new games on the handheld.
@Mrvengeace182 That's very true, Mr. Bialystock.
This sounds like it be something I enjoy. So I will definitely keep my ears open for more news
Another cool, laid-back, exploration-heavy life sim, this time with a Hogwarts twist? Yep, I'm sold.
For me it's bought already.
Ouch...
2D much.
What an absolutely pointless article.
Stardew with a harry potter skin is what this sounds like. I was bored of stardew after about 5 hrs of gameplay. This game will be the same thing by the looks of it.
@Jack_Goetz I think the point of the article was to reveal the next game that chucklefish are working on because until now nobody knew what it was.
I'm thinking "Little Witch Academia" meeting "Earthbound" ... count me in, at least as long as it is a more structured experience than Stardew Valley.
@bolt05 Nah, this isn't new news - they shared all of that stuff on their official Twitter account months ago... (including its name, some info and the exact screenshots shown above)
I need to see more. The idea is cool, though.
I will definitely try it, I haven't really played much stardew valley but it was kind of fun.
@TobiasAmaranth a weird and wonderful comment! Made me think....wouldn’t it b ace if Jack Kirby had made a game....
I thought ConcernedApe was making this and got very excited. Not so much, if it's just the publishers of SDV. No guarantees whatsoever that it will have the Stardew magic.
I will keep an eye on it, though. Citing Pratchett as an influence is always a good way to get me to listen.
Where's WarGroove?
I'll keep an eye on it. I like the sound of using magic, but it will all depend on gameplay, story and setting. I hope it's good!
Pocket Rumble?
@TobiasAmaranth Instead of giving you the award for weirdest complaint in this comment thread, I'm genuinely interested to know if you have examples or a description of how one would visually represent a world of buildings and technology built from "the same magic [they] live and breathe"?
I'm trying to, but having trouble imagining what a world/aesthetic like that might look like (especially with 16-bit-ish graphics). Plus, who's to say that every cobblestone and brick in those screenshots wasn't previously some other material, transmogrified by alchemical processes, or simply brought into being by speaking its name?
Aside from translating to more languages and porting to consoles, everything else in Stardew Valley was pretty much done by Eric Barone (ConcernedApe)
If i had to expect something from them, it's from their experience with Starbound which wasn't a smooth sailing during development and the early access.
But i'm hoping they learned a lot and who knows, this might turns out to be good but for now i'll keep the "wait and see" stance.
without a doubt a day 1 purchase for me! im super excited about this
I get to live out my harry potter dreams here haha should be legit
From the non-publisher of Pocket Rumble
Can you only wave your wand twice before having to go to bed at 9:30 in the morning?
Holy crap! I friggin love Harry Potter and Stardew Valley! This sounds like a dream!! 😍
Interested but I need to know more.
I'm happy this game is being released. I love such kinda games and who cares if its not from the creator of stardew valley. Stardew valley is a fabulous game. And the perhaps this game will be very big to. For the people who don't know Magicians quest mysterious times for the nintendo ds was exactly such a game. Animal crossing meets harry potter. Back in those days it was actually a better game then animal crossing wild world. But there is always a group of people calling such games a bad clone. In the gaming world where there are tons of generic boring shooters. I welcome such a unique game like this. And no not everything is a stardew valley clone or like it. God such comments are so negative
Want ❤️
Looks cool, but one step at a time. I need Pocket Fighters on my Switch.... >_<
Honestly, I had no reason to get Stardew Valley, art style (mainly for characters, lol) just...didn't do it for me. Besides I had Rune Factory for my farming/dating/whatever game anyways. I doubt the art style will change here, but I may still look into this one.
@noobish_hat Maybe glass is cheaper than mana-potions?
I can’t think off top of my head of another magic/wizard game in this vein (correct me if I am wrong) so this to me is a day one buy! Sounds great for people who like me grew up with the Harry Potter books!
It looks gorgeous but I'll wait to see what the gameplay is like before I get too excited.
@TobiasAmaranth - And this is exactly why witchcraft, prayers and other supernatural magic is not real. The world would look like a Harry Potter movie at the very least.
I would need to know more about it. All you are telling me is it is a dating sim with some magic and exploration elements. I enjoyed My Witch Academia but I don't think it'd make a great game.
