Ehm... what's the deal kids? This game is mediocre in every way. It feels like a standard freeware game and the work of an amateur. This doesn't come close to anything like Super Metroid or Castlevania symphony of the night. The graphics are ugly, I can forgive the lack of quality, but the character design is disgusting. How is this game something to get very exited about? It can't compete with most games that are 20 years old. On top of that it's not innovative or original in any way. What is it you guy's are blinded by? Sympathy for the developer? The retro appeal it has? This is in no way more than a simple and mediocre game.
Before debating too far, how many endings did you see? How much of this game did you play before dismissing it? Other than negative comments about graphics (which many retro fans, myself included, find delightful) what else suggests that the game isn't worth playing?
Cave Story has a great weapon system, decent level design, and a charming story. The fact that it's an indie production created by one guy and then shared for free on the internet makes it more appealing to many people. Retro gamers who like 2D adventures also have a lengthy game to dig into, and there are definitely some clever parts to the game that are creative enough for my liking.
It's fine if this (admittedly simple) game doesn't fit your interests, but calling it "mediocre" simply isn't justified from the reasons you've given so far.
On a side note, interesting to see you mention Symphony of the Night. That is a game that has aged very poorly in my opinion... to the point that I'd rather play Cave Story any day. I do appreciate the GBA legacy that Symphony of the Night created, however.
cave story was made by one japanese computer programmer in over 4 years his spare time... shouldn't the very fact that you have heard of it be evidence that it is one of the best games ever made, rather than the other way around?
I've heard of Ninjabread Man, by that logic surely that should it make it awesome right?
my point wasn't that cave story is great because we've heard of it, it was the opposite- that you can't judge games by their level of fame alone. he was saying that cave story isn't well known enough to be a great game, which i thought was unfair since it actually is incredibly well known for an independent game. i made that point about how successful cave story has been only to prove to him that by his own logic (fame=quality), it should be a great game.

those "ugly" 8 bit visuals carry a huge amount of nostalgia with them if you grew up playing 8-bit games. pixel's a talented artist and he could have made the game look much prettier from a purely technical standpoint; the higher res sprites he's drawn on the wiiware version demonstrate that. the graphics were deliberately limited to pay homage to his favorite games from the NES era; either you like that retro style or you don't, but you can't imply that he failed to make the game look good because he's an amateur, or that he wanted something better and couldn't pull it off. he worked over all those years to make every pixel you see on screen exactly the way it is, and if he wasn't happy with something, i'm sure he would have worked a few years more until he was.
Thanks for your great response, a point well made. I love how passionate you are in defending a game you like, therefore my sympathy for the game is growing.
it's just not your game, i guess. i love cave story because of the sheer simple fun of it; you never lose the sense that it was made by someone extremely inspired, who wanted it to be fun for their own sake as much as the player's. no time limitations, budget constraints, or meddling supervisors translates into a game far more pure than what we usually get to see. i suppose that for those same reasons you could say it has an amateurish quality, but i would not say that in a bad way.
for what it's worth, there are lots of comparable games that are considered classics that i can't stand- mega man, for instance, does nothing for me. likewise, i've seen people here dump all over super metroid, which i love to death. often great games will fail to appeal to you for no good reason at all, really; just move along and respect that it's not your thing.
as far as we know, no. after the november submission nintendo said there were still a few things to fix before they'd accept it. nicalis has said they'd let us know when it got accepted and that hasn't happened yet, so i think it's still being worked on.
Meh, as with Meat Boy I was never bothered about this one in its original form. I've decided to generally ignore Internet hype because most of it comes from a whole bunch of people who know a whole bunch of nothing.
apparently, it's hitting on the 22nd of next month. here's hoping it actually does. :3
