So I got a Wii U as a Christmas gift, and overall I enjoy it, but there are some things about it that concern me, so I thought I'd ask here about them.

First off is it just mine or are the video streaming services kinda glitchy? Netflix in particular seems to randomly decide that it's not going to play a show. It gives me an error message, and then if I restart the console it will work again though only for a while then I'll have to do it again. Any thoughts? Is it my network (Netflix on the regular Wii seems to work just fine) or something else? (The Wii U is literally right next to my router.)

Secondly, when going from a video streaming service back to the Wii U menu, sometimes my TV just goes black. The console is still on (the image is still displayed on the GamePad), but I have to reset my surround sound receiver and the image will come back to the TV. An issue with my sound system or TV or Wii U? Thoughts?

Also the other day it just froze and made a loud sound from the speakers. I turned it off and on again, and things worked normally, but I found it very odd that it just randomly froze. Is it possible I got a bum console?

Your console is fine. I have been waiting for a stability patch from netflix since October myself. I mostly use youtube because of how glitchy netflix designed their wii u app

Any thoughts on why the TV screen just goes blank forcing me to restart my surround sound system? Is my system (from 2008) just too old or did I hook it up wrong? I mean I'd assume given that it works normally then I hooked it up correctly. It's just incredibly annoying to have to turn it off and then on again when the Wii U seems to make the TV just black out...

I dunno. I never had any of those problems.. I would call Nintendo support just to make sure.

I have a feeling they will just tell me to call Samsung, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

Another suggestion would be to check the HDMI cable. I've seen the link apparently go in an out and in my case it was a bad cable (not Wii U, but iPad to TV).

It's just odd because it only seems to happen when going from a video streaming service back to the main menu...

That would tend it discount the cable. It could still be something where there's a resolution shift happening that your TV can't handle for some reason. I don't know what resolution you're running, but it might be worth switching the Wii U TV settings from progressive to interlaced, e.g. 1080p to 1080i, just to see if that changes anything.

Well it's about a three year old TV......a Samsung LED. It should be 1080p.....if anything the sound system is my limiting factor (it's a Samsung that's about 6 years old).

The odd thing is that this ONLY happens when I back out of a video streaming service (i.e. hit the Home button, then click on Wii U Menu.

Games (I have New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U as well as Call of Duty: Ghosts), don't seem to have any issues.

Then as others have suggested it's probably just a bug in the Netflix App. Of course that bug could be down to the app switching resolutions on the fly. I'd be surprised if everything you're watching is 1080p. The reason I suggest changing resolutions in the Wii U settings is just to see if that's what's happening. It might even be 720p. It only takes a second or two to change the settings; of course if you can live with it until there's an app update, that's cool.

I'll give it a shot. I've actually stopped using Netflix for now and am relying on Amazon instant video for now. it works much better than Netflix, but I still get the TV cutting out when I back out of the program. I'll change the resolution and see what happens though. Thanks!

Well I changed resolutions and the problem was still occurring. Finally I was able to resolve it by changing up how things were plugged into the receiver and TV. In short it's all working beautifully now. Thanks for all the replies.

Another question I have concerns the game pad. If it is fully charged, does it hurt the battery for it to sit on the charger all the time? Is it possible for the battery to get overcharged?

No, and no.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

In theory yes but most products are intelligence enough to disconnect when the battery are charged. Since it will disconnect when the battery is charged then it is almost impossible to overcharge the battery. So you don't have to worry about leaving it plug in.

But you have to be careful with old devices that was made in early 90 or earlier.

Umm… Care to have some gravy?
