Sorry for bringing up the 3DS version, but I felt it relevant (and the same topic in two different forums is probably looked down upon).

I've got both a Wii U and a 3DS XL. I've been contemplating getting this game, seeing as Gamestop dropped the Wii U price to $20 new. And, just today, the 3DS version also dropped to $20 there. So my question is, which do you prefer, or, if there is a good enough reason, would having both be beneficial for $40? I'm leaning towards the Wii U version, as it seems for optimal (but not mandatory) gameplay on the 3DS requires the CPP, but the portability of the 3DS version strike me too. I don't know how much I'd play online. Began playing the demos again after months of leaving it be, just to get the feel of it again (if you call it that, as the demos aren't exactly the greatest).

Pretty much you summed it up in your post. The 3DS one is great if you want to be able to play MHU on the go or you tend to be on the go alot of your game playing time. However the controls especially underwater is horrible on the 3DS unless you have a CPP. If you are going to be around your Wii U you can use off tv mode if you want to lie in bed and play a "portable version" and you dont have to worry about the bad controls since you have dual sticks on the gamepad.

So basically it all depends on how mobile you want to be with this game. If you are mostly going to be playing it around your house I would just stick with the Wii U version.

I enjoy having both, lets me play online and on the go with the same file. I got the WiiU version game while it was on discount.

Getting both for 40 sounds like a pretty nice deal, it's basically the original price of the 3DS one, so you could simply imagine you bought that one and the WiiU version was an extra

Btw, the controls are not as atrocious as some may say, one gets used to using the touch dpad.

I say go with the Wii U version, at least. It has online, HD, and 5.1 PCM.

You can get the 3DS version to go online if you have a Wii U Lan Adapter of some sort and download the packet relay tools. It's 3D, portable, but CPP would be recommended.

You could get the 3DS version, then a LAN adapter, so that you can still go online and have the benefit of portability. I would just go with Wii U, probably. I bought the game for $60(or whatever, I can't remember) when it came out, so you're already getting a better deal.

EDIT: The only way I would be able to recommend the 3DS version, is if you get the CPP and Wii U LAN adapter, otherwise I wouldn't bother and just get the Wii U version.

If you were to pick one of them, I'd definitely recommend the Wii U version. The only advantage the 3DS version has is portability. That said, Monster Hunter is something you probably like to sit down with for a longer time than more casual games, which in my opinion diminishes the value of the portability.

At that price, you`re obliged to get both. Also, anyone telling you underwater controls are hard, without the CPP are just bad.

As I don't have a Wii U, I'd have to recommend the 3DS version. But I see what others here are saying as if you are mostly at home, the Wii U would probably be recommended. I've always been a portable system fan and so I only have the 3DS. From what i've heard, it is basically the same game as the Wii U but without the online.

As @Morpheel mentioned, get both and it's like you bought a 3DS game and got the other for free. That's the way I like to look at things. Having both is an advantage for you. Especially now during the holidays where if you plan to go to family events, spend the night at some relatives house, you can take your 3DS version and still enjoy some monster hunting. Go back home the next day or so, and you can transfer your data to your Wii U and enjoy the game on the big screen. That's the way I'd look at it.

If you can get both do it. You can shoot your save between both games meaning you and can solo hunt on your 3DS and than take that dude online to hunt with others.

This is exactly what I do, Wii U online and 3DS is Singleplayer when out. If you are going to get one though, get the Wii U version for the online.
