I went on Club Nintendo and it says my stars are set to expire by the end of this month! Does this still apply because the service is ending if so I'll pick up a Wii U download

It still applies. Luckily, I have none expiring at the end of the month.

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

I was really annoyed by Nintendo having put Codes with a very short expiry date into recent prints of old games.
I thought this was a good opportunity to catch up on buying some older Wii U and 3DS games that I wanted anyway.
But when I opened New Super Mario Bros 2 and both of the Bayonettas the code said 31st March as the expiration date. I think I wasted 4 codes by not knowing that they had such a short expiration date. Found an unused code of Kingdom Hearts anyway, a game that I own since 2 years and was even preowned, that had a code inside expiring in 2016. Grrr.

Never want to come down, never want to put my feet back down on the ground.

Yeah, I think it's stupid that stars have an expiry date.

The most stupid thing is...Nintendo keeps adding stuff to the Club, and the best stuff is yet to come.
And yet, your chances of collecting stars are getting slim by the hour - no codes in new games, codes alredy expired in old games, no more survery points for online purchases...very silly logic, bringing out the best stuff now that basically most people have spent their star credit.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

I don't find it stupid to add good stuff to the club in it's last days. But I can understand the uproar regarding that I hardly saw anything interesting at all in the 2 years I knew of the programme.
I can also understand, that they don't want the game cases to be filled with useless codes after the system closes down, but they could have continued letting you add stars via the e-shop at least.

Right I have 4750 stars with 1250 expiring leaving me with 3500 stars should I keep them and not spend anything before the end of the month and sacrifice the stars in hope the better items will be cheaper than that in the coming months? I mean the eco bag was 3000 so I'm hopeful!

Simple, on the final day before expiration download stuff which sums to 1250 or slightly less and then keep the non-expiring 3500 stars for later.
