I would not buy the wheels with Mario Kart 8 - They don't add that much. Since he is 5, games I would recommend are Super Mario 3D World and Yoshis Wooly World. Super Luigi U may be on the tougher side and you can play as Luigi in Super Mario 3D World!
@Rexcalibr I remember getting a game boy when I was about 5-7 and it was fine. Probably would be best if you helped your child set up the games, but I think other than that it should be perfectly fine!

Reviving my old thread. I posed a question about a Zelda game in another thread but here I wanted to go over what game to get him for the holidays that he could play (or we could play together).
Him and I together play Mario Kart 8, Mario 3D World, Yoshi's Wooly World, and Wii U Sports. He watches me play Splatoon and we finished Wind Waker HD together but the controls in those two games are too hard for him to play.
I want to get another game that isn't too hard for him. I love that in 3D World and YWW we play together and I can do the hard parts. Would DK: Tropical Freeze work like that? The 19.99 price via Nintendo Selects is great and I think he watched a Donkey Kong game on YouTube and liked it. Would you recommend that one or would the controls be a little hard for him? Thanks.
@ks-man While I think DKC: Tropical Freeze is one of the best games on the Wii U, I will admit, it's pretty difficult, especially later on in the game. It's similar to New Super Mario Bros. U in that they're 2D platformers. Don't know if you played that game already, but DK is often considered more difficult than that game. Although the controle itself are pretty easy, since it's a 2D game, so no complicated camera controls. Maybe he likes it? But it definitely takes practise, it's a game where you need to get used to seeing the game over screen a lot.
@ks-man Consider Rayman Legends or New Super Mario Bros. U as both these are platform games a bit like 3D World, but they're only in 2D, so your son won't have quite the same level of freedom, but they're fun multiplayer games all the same.
If he really enjoyed the freedom in 3D World then consider one of the Lego games , especially Lego City Undercover.
I'm sure Minecraft would go down well as well, though at 5 I'm not sure how quickly he'll get into it.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@ks-man Donkey Kong TF is really fantastic, one of the finest platformers ever made I think but it's pretty tough going.I let my 11 year old nephew play it when i was back home last month and he got frustrated with it fairly quickly.I've never actually played co-op on it though but it definitely feels more suited to solo play.I'm sure the NL review pointed that out too.Not sure if you've got Captain Toad yet but I'd recommend that. It's only single player but the 2 of you can work together on it.Pikmin 3 as well maybe,he might have problems with controls though.Wiimote controls work best with Pikmin.
