The difficulty is what makes it so unenjoyable. I wasn't having fun because of the unforgiving levels: I was chewing on my controller and throwing it at the walls.
That, and it had no soul. The game wasn't just hard, it hated players. It was a game that did not want to be played. It was challenging, punishing, unrewarding, and had terrible and cheap level design. It's not just a hard game, it's a mediocre one as well, and deserves all the hate it gets.

I love hard games. Contra is one of my all time favorite series. I do not like this game.
SMB USA might be a cake walk, but it's way more enjoyable.
