OK, I was halfway through the third dungeon in the original Zelda, when I learned I had to get the white sword. After finding another heart container and getting the sword, I returned. I got to the boss, laid a bomb, and killed it instantly. I was like "WTF?" I got the heart container and the Triforce. Easiest boss ever.

Umm... I think it's the first one. I might be wrong though. If I remember correctly, all he does is go back and forth across the screen, and the only way to get hit is to stand directly in his way.
It's possible you got lucky. Or maybe it's easier than I remember. You have to lay the bomb perfectly in the middle of him, and he moves around randomly, so it's no science. Otherwise you can end up just breaking off one of his beaks, which is often what happens for me. Regardless, certainly not the easiest boss ever, and he reappears later in the game multiple times (as do most bosses) with different room layouts to make it more challenging.
Yeah, you just got lucky. It's possible to kill him with one bomb, but it's definitely not guaranteed, and he increases his speed and his rate of fire as you wound him. He can be relatively dangerous.
No, the easiest Zelda boss ever is Zelda 2's Carock. The only way to beat him is to use the Reflect magic to return his shots to him, so to win, you simply cast Reflect, then duck in the corner and watch him die. That's literally all there is to it.
I fought Carock so many times without Reflect as a kid. Very frustrating, haha. I might have even gotten the spell and not realized what it did, I can't remember. Once you know how though, definitely much easier than this Manhandla.
Heh, so you could actually fight Carock without Reflect? Never knew that, I read about his weakness in a magazine before even playing the game, and never tried anything else.
I think you misunderstood. Of course you can fight him, you just can't win, hahaha. Nothing else does damage. Your magazine taught you well. If only I'd had that magazine growing up, I'd have saved hours of consternation and frustration.
Similarly, I didn't know about the cross (or whatever item lets you see invisible creatures), and tried in vain many a time to journey the path toward the final palace, not knowing I wasn't supposed to go that way yet. Good times!
I had Nintendo Power at least... I just didn't use walkthroughs much, instead gravitating toward cheat codes and secrets when not just looking at the pretty pictures.
