That's what UK trading standards concluded I believe. It only counts as gambling if you can end up with nothing.
EA are obviously hoping that definition will be used universally.
It'd be nice if people just had the self control to spend their money intelligently rather than constantly needing the nanny state to take care of them.

That's fine and dandy, but laws exist for gambling to not be accessible to minors. That seems like quite loophole, though. Can a company sell lotto tickets to minors if there's no chance for nothing? Like the smallest prize for anyone who bought one being a penny candy? It's still not nothing.
The nanny state would serve as more than a babysitter for adults, because games with online gambling are rated as Teen (or even possibly E for Everyone). Non-gaming parents use these ratings as basis for what their kids can play. An adult or mature rating would let these parents know that content is in the game.
I mean, ratings were brought into effect to inform parents of violence, drug and alcohol use, sexual content and the decision should be theirs...but why isn't gambling included in that list, especially when it's the only one of those with immediate and direct real life effects.

Whoa..... well, wasn't expecting THAT. My best hope was a heavily revised progression system that eliminated anything REMOTELY resembling P2W in early 2018... but I didn't expect them to outright pull the plug (for now) right near launch.

Still not buying the game. Even if it's gonna be less pay to win, it will still probably be pay to win in the end.

I'm still not supporting EA. It's clear what they are all about and thought they could get away with. I just hope this kind of fiasco being this public scares other companies from trying the same.
That they say they have "heard us loud and clear", I wonder who they mean...the loud playerbase or the silent heavy hand of Disney. It's quite a sudden change of heart to be defending the 'gameplay' and mechanics as fair for everyone for days, then suddenly suspend cash purchases right before launch when Disney supposedly calls them.
So, it appears Disney did get involved, but it was the playerbase that made it very loud and clear they were not happy with being treated like this and something was done about it (at least temporarily as we'll see how they reimplement cash sales later).
How much of this plan of EA's that Disney knew beforehand, I don't know, but I think we all figured they wouldn't suffer this kind of bad PR barely a month before the launch of The Last Jedi.

I really would have liked to hear that phone call from Disney.

EA is just trying to save face now. Still not buying it.

I take it all back. All of it. Battlefront 2 has in fact been extremely entertaining so far.

...what? The actual game? Hahahaha no. I have no interest, and I wouldn't have the ability to play it even if I did. But this consumer REVOLT against it has been one of the best things about the past week. Easily. I am so interested to see where this goes next.

They are clearly just doing this so Battlefront 2's bad image doesn't rub off on The Last Jedi and not overshadow its marketing. My gut told me back at E3 that this would be pay 2 win. No season pass -> Loot Boxes! And EA's greed guaranteed this wouldn't just be cosmetics.

Not gonna support them one bit and I hope many others won't jump on board simply because microtransactions are disabled for the time being.

Have a nice day/good night!

@GoldenGamer88 More like Disney gave them a call. Disney doesn't care what EA does with Star Wars, but if there's one thing they don't like, it's bad press.

Anyway, the loot boxes will be back, so this is nothing more than a temporary fix to get people to buy this game day one. Damage control. It's just unfortunate that this game will sell well regardless of the circumstances.

Seeing as how the loot crate controversy has hit mainstream, I wouldn't be surprised if it affected sales a bit. And then if they bring them (loot crates) back unchanged..... well, revolt #2 begins (I hope). I want to see this game fixed.

Peek-a-boo

@DarthNocturnal Out of curiosity, given that you and I have made up the majority of posts in this thread (or least before all this controversy begun...), have you purchased the game?

A very selfish part of me hope this bombs, so that I can pick it up for £10 by years end.

@Peek-a-boo

My pre-order is en route now, (which I picked up for $50 CAD; $30 off). If I had forseen all this, I probably wouldn't have done so.

It's definitely a conflict of interests... but ultimately I'd rather it get salvaged (I don't think we can truly save it at this point; it's forever written in history as the game that broke the camel's back for microtransactions) then written off. That's part of the reason there is an uproar in the first place; people want the game, just not in it's current state.

I'd definitely hold off on getting it if you haven't, until (or if) they do overhaul the game to include a proper progression system with 0% credit card influence. Unfortunately, I'm not expecting that until early 2018, due to how long it will probably take to make such a system.

@DarthNocturnal It wouldn't be until then anyways, no way Disney would allow them to return until after The Last Jedi is out. Possibly not until the movie is no longer running in theaters

I'm hearing that the campaign is really short and poorly written.

How could you sell over 10 million copies for the first game and worry about successfully monetising the sequel?
Their budgets for these are either way too high or EA are greedy buggers who care so much about large profits that they'd sell their own mothers as DLC if needs be.

Converted from Sony to Nintendo during 7th gen and never looked back.

Peek-a-boo

@DarthNocturnal Actually, you have managed to save yourself an agreeably nice amount of discount so, it’s not a bad price for a brand new game, seeing as the prices for video games in Canada have always been unusually high, especially in comparison to the US.

I had it on pre-order by buying Gran Turismo Sport and Star Wars Battlefront II together for £75 ($60-ish CAD each), but after all this news, I got in touch with Amazon customer services and politely asked/requested if I could swap out Star Wars Battlefront II for Wolfenstein II instead, and they did.

Quite pleased I did that, as Wolfenstein II has not only surprised me, but it is one of my favourite games of the year!

Do let us know what you think of the game!

@Dezzy I’m pretty sure that because they have three separate studios (DICE, Motive and Criterion) doing two separated components for the game - the story campaign and the multiplayer - the budget is in the region of $100 million (!)

The original Star Wars Battlefront was bundled with nearly every single PlayStation 4 around the world at the time, and the game itself was available for half price - both digitally and physical copies - when The Force Awakens was on at the cinema.

And just one studio did the original game (DICE) with a little bit of external help as its release date was approaching, compared to the three studios this time round. Games are becoming more and more expensive and to me, it looks like they either had a big budget or that it was somewhat mismanaged along the way.

At the end of the day, it mostly boils down to ‘greedy company continues to be greedy’.

@IceClimbers The campaign isn't finished either. The rest of it will be released in the future, but nobody knows when... And if you don't mind spoilers; Some of it is pretty bad. You get to play as Luke in one of the levels. Which should be cool, but you're stuck in a small room defending your teammate against small bugs. They got you to play as Luke Skywalker and they chose the most boring and tedious part of the game, like what!? I've also heard that most levels just repeat the same objectives over and over again. And in the end it feels like the multiplayer, but with (pretty bad) AI and a cut-scenes in-between.

@Peek-a-boo Battlefront 2 wasn't made from scratch though. To me it looks like most assets were re-used from the first game. The engine is still the same too. Meaning that this game was a lot cheaper to develop than it seems at first glance.

Peek-a-boo

@Octane I was going by what a developer on ResetEra has recently said about budgets ballooning in the past three or four years, of which he/she openly mentioned that both Destiny 2 and Star Wars Battlefront II were very close to the $100 million bracket.

Here’s a slightly out of date ‘most expensive games to develop’ list on Wikipedia: - Grand Theft Auto V cost $137 million to develop!

Motive created the story campaign, DICE worked on the multiplayer whilst Criterion did the vehicle side of things (space battles in both the single and multiplayer, for example).

Three big studios developing one game is going to be pretty costly!
