Well, with an utter lack of a search function, I just decided to open my own thread on it. I'm assuming this falls under the right category
But, anybody here play DnD?
I, personally, have never gotten to play it, but I had always wanted to. Luckily, thanks to watching Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (Community's best episode, in my opinion) with my bro-in-law, I might get to playing it pretty soon.
Anyways, anybody have any thoughts on this particular tabletop RPG? Or any ideas about other (or better) ones?

I use to play it back in Jr High and High school. Mostly I have played 2nd Edition and dabble in 3rd and 3.5 editions before my D&D dry spell hit.

With a good DM and players you can have some memorable times however here are some tips if you are new to it.

1). Ask the DM and other players if you can sit in on a game session before committing that way you can see if its something you will like. Also you can see what house rules and such the group has before you jump in and waste everyones time including your own if you decide you dont like it.

2). Be prepared to send some money. I wont lie D&D (or any Tabletop RPG) can get expensive even if you are just a player. Most DM and players will expect you to have your own tools so to speak. Stuff like an assortment of dice, a copy of the rule book (usually called a Player Handbook) pencils and paper to get started.

3). Just relax and have fun remember in the end its just a game theres no need to get bent out of shape cause your level 15 Warrior was eaten by a red dragon. By having that character die can open up a world of ideas for new character like maybe that new mage you were thinking of making turns out to be the warriors son out for revenge on the Dragon that ate his father.

4). Respect the DM and other players. Its there time too sure there will be times that you disagree with the DMs ruling and such but just go along with it as a forum DM I can say that maybe its just part of the DMs plan for your character that you dont know yet or wont know for awhile. DOnt waste the DM and other players time arguing they are there to have fun like you.

Anyway I hope those tips help out and I wish you fun and good times on your grand adventures.

There's a search at the very top of the page.

I'll just let Waltz deal with that if he feels like it.

Welcome to the forums, but you're wrong.

Dungeons and Dragons invented the RPG. Final Fantasy started out as an primitive attempt to copy that concept, and involved into its own genre. In fact, JRPGs aren't even role playing, it's a fallacy the game's industry never bothered to fix.

But D & D is awesome. Haven't had the chance to play for years (and only ever played 4th edition once ) But the many, many hours of my youth I lost in playing 2nd edition... get a good group together and you'll be making memories you never forget.

RIP Mr Gygax

Hey Tasuki - we should totally do a 2nd Edition D & D game for nostalgia's sake sometime _

They have RPG like elements but are not RPGs. An RPG would be like the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series. Just casue a game has RPG elements in it doesnt make it an RPG.

Well, I'd say Western RPGs are the closest to "true" RPGs

Things like Fallout or Oblivion where you have the options to do things your way. Problem is they'd never have a shot in hell at coming even close to the depth you can get to by doing literally whatever the hell you want. This is what always made DnD so appealing to me
Gotta say that trying games like Facade are a good timekiller for those who like "role" part of the roleplay, but they really don't cut it. Although, I did get some absolutely hilarious results out of it

Oh God how I loved Greyhawk!

I tended to play Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun and Ravenloft, but as a player, a friend DM's Greyhawk world was possibly my favourite campaign ever.

Didn't you just say "lame excuse for a 'good time'?" Dunno about everyone else, but the "Might try out D & D" surprises me in that context.

And don't get me wrong. Final Fantasy and other JRPGs are wildly entertaining, it's just that the "RPG" part of that genre discription is misapplied. They're not RPGs, at all.

The Witcher. Don't forget The Witcher.

But yeah, Western developers have, historically, had a better grasp of the real RPG genre. Part of the problem, I suspect, is Japan hasn't really had an equivilent to D & D for pen and paper games, and the Japanese translation of D & D isn't exactly stellar (or popular).

@WaltzElf: OMG I played Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft as well. I enjoyed those two the most which is why I DMd Greyhawk I didnt want to DM FR or RL I wanted to play it lol.

Always wanted to play the Witcher, never got around to doing it. Will have to give it a shot now
Thanks for bringing that one back up

Also, a friend brought to my attention a tabletop RPG called Arkham Horror (I believe) that sounded pretty cool
I'm semi-interested in the Cthulhu mythos, so it could be a good run

The Call of Cthulhu pen and paper RPG is awesome, too. It needs a talented group of roleplayers to be really effective, but with a good group, it's seriously entertaining.

Haha, I remember the buggy Morrowind knockoff Call of Cthulhu
Still, I'd probably give it a shot

I too spent many years playing me some D&D. I got started in the 4th grade and happened upon a DM Guide at Toys R Us. Ended with a little dabbling in 3rd ed. Played mostly 2nd. Forgotten Realms is usually what I DM'd but most of my fondest memories come from a (former) friends home brew campaign world. Then there was Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Dragonlance, and Al-Qadim. I never really got into Greyhawk, Planescape, or Spelljammer.

I'll echo one of the things that Tasuki said: ask to sit in on a session if you can. This way you get a chance to check out their gaming style. For example, I can't stand "power gamers" and really wouldn't be interested in a game where everyone is using +27 vorpal swords and one-hit dragons with daggers. I'm more into "dark" campaign settings where characters are nearly hopelessly fighting against almost overpowering and world destroying odds.

We should post some of our characters in this thread. I'll have to see if I can dig any of mine up one of these days.

Boy I have so many characters I wouldnt know where to start. Probably my favorite was a Paladin that I had in my friends Ravenloft campaign. I played him as a Paladin up to level 8 or 9 he started to fall into despair after being in such a dark and despairing land. Well during this one Adventure my friend was running we had to make a deal with the "dark powers" of Ravenloft to bring a fallen comrade back from the dead. Well to make a long story short my Palading ended up trading in his Paladin hood to bring this character back thus losing all of my Paladin abilities making him more or less a warrior. Well after the quest ended my character said farewell to the group cause he figures since he wasnt a Paladin anymore he had to find a new path in life a way to combat the despair and darkness that is Ravenloft. During the down time between game sessions I eneded up totally redesigning my character in the ended he ended up something like Van Helsing or Simon Belmont a warrior who specialized in battleing vampires, werewolves, ghosts etc. He started using more modern weapons such as flintlock pistols and Crossbows rather than a sword and shield. I even had him dressing in more Early Victorian clothing as oppose the like Medieval clothing. Even his who attitude changed. Its a shame that I stopped playing before I could further develop his new personality.

@Magi: I agree with you I can stand power gaming sessions to me they just dont give you that sense of accomplishment
