Topic: Dollar General 'Classic Gaming Consoles'

So I was in Dollar General near my house yesterday and I noticed an Atari, and a Sega Genisis system sitting on the self for 40 bucks a piece.

The Atari had 75 games, with two wireless controllers.
The Genisis had 80 games, with two wireless controllers.

The systems do look slightly different then the originals, but the conrollers don't look too far off.
Along with the games that come with them, if you still have an original cartridge for either of the systems, you can play those too.

Now, I can't find hardly anything about them online though. I was being hopeful to find a NES like this, but I highly doubt Nintendo would allow it.

Here is one of the only pictures I could find online :

Does anyone have any more information about these, or what other (if any) systems will be available??

I found an add for DG for this thing, and they will be selling it for 25 bucks on Thanksgiving.

I imagine the Atari system you saw was this one, the Atari Flashback 4:
http://videogamecritic.net/vgc_fb4.htm

I have the Flashback 2, which is a great system — but the Flashback two was not emulating the games — the FB2 designers actually hard-coded a 2600 system on to a chip, so it is runnign the included games authentically (and you could also hack the console to add a catridge port that would run classic cartridges perfectly — and the designers of the systemt actually provided a "how-to" on their website).

The Flashback 4, however, goews back to the emulation that was used in the FB1 and FB3 (although the emu'ing is supposedly better in the FB4), which may result in some games being slightly "off", but only really if you're a purist for the games. If you're just looking for some great classic games to play and don't need "perfect" emulation (which, again, is really only noticeable if you're a purist for the games), then i'd reccomend picking it up.

The Shpydarloggery
She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

Yep. That's it. Thanks for finding that.

I still wonder if the Genesis one is worth it, or if any other systems will come out....

I imagine that you won't find any new products coming out that give you a 100% correct gameplay experience, since it's probably a lot easier and cheaper to emulate via software, which either takes shortcuts or needs a very powerful modern system to emulate an old console correctly (that's if you can even figure out how the original console worked with 100% accuracy).

If you're interested in it, and don't care if some games are a little off, it's probably worth picking up - even if all 80 games aren't great, I'm sure there are a decent 10 or 20 that make it worth the cash.

If you want to play the games as they were meant to be played, unfortunately I think you're in for the expensive route of tracking down an original system and the original games. (Which is a real pity, for any old system)

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

The Genesis one has been known to have small graphical and sound issues. Nothing major just small ones.

Yeah. As cool as the originals is, they are expensive to get a hold of now. My NES doesn't work, and I wish I could still play the games. The screen just blinks black, then white, then black, then white....
Except Mario 3....it sort of tries to come up, with jumbled sprites everywhere, and Mario and Lugi sometimes being visable on teh screen.
