It's been a long time since I've been on here but I was wondering if anyone here can provide me with information on what USB C cables work on the Switch. I know there's an official cable from Nintendo, but the entire cable is together not separated.

I want to get a battery charger for the Switch when I'm out and about, but looking for the right USB C cable which is challenging. I know there's a guide to looking for one but I'm curious in knowing what you guys use. I do have one but I'm not sure if it would work on the Switch.

(Cable Matters Ultra Slim Series USB-C Cable (USB-C to USB) in Black 6.6 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S8GU544/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_94WkA...

If anyone could suggest in what I could get and what you use I would greatly appreciate it.

I'd assume all USB C cables work, should that not be the case?

You don't want that one. It has USB-A on one end which bottlenecks charge Speed. You want USB-C to USB-C, and you want a USB-C PD (power delivery) Charger.

There's a forum discussing this exact topic with recommendations, but... this is what you want. You have to be careful to only buy cables and chargers that are in spec and Amazon Basics is one of them. Also, Apple chargers and cables and Google chargers and cables are all in spec.

I often use a MacBook charger (usb-c to usb-c) as that gives it lots of power, but in a pinch my pro controller one (usb to usb-c ) works fine. But yes, to my knowledge any cable should do, but I’d keep to ones from decent brands, you can never be careful enough

Not any cable will work! There are a lot of faulty USB A to USB C cables out there. Only use A to C cables from trusted sources (e.g. Nintendo, Apple). The faulty ones can damage your charger (I do not think they damage your switch). However all USB C to USB C cables are fine.

I understand, thank you for providing me with the items I need to get. I'll look into it. But what about the USB C that has a USB on the end. Would that be good?

The one I linked is it good enough? I searched on the product page and it seems that people use it on the Switch.

It's handy to have a USB-A to USB-C because you're going to find a lot more places you can potentially plug it in - in flight entertainment systems, cars, etc. - and it's better to have slow charging than none at all.

If you're carrying a cable around with you then it's likely going to be in a case, and if you have a case with you you're going to have a charger. It's best to simply invest in the USB-C PD (power delivery) ecosystem and abstain from USB-C to USB-A entirely.

Not only that, but as someone mentioned above those cables can be dangerous because the USB-A end of the cable, in many instances, does not safely regulate the higher voltages that USB-C will draw. Yet another reason to simply make the decision to invest in the USB-C ecosystem 100%.

Besides that, you can charge 0-100% in 3-4 hours while playing Zelda on max brightness, as opposed to 8 hours and that's with the system powered off.

If you absolutely positively insist on using USB-A for some reason, you're going to have to be extremely careful to make sure the cable is fully in spec. And that's a lot of work and a lot of research..

I have a cable, in which I provided with the link.

This is something I need to keep in mind, thank you for raising awareness.

I have several Nintendo cords because they came with controllers. But even the USB to USB - C cord that came with my ASUS laptop works fine. I know there are rapid charge cables on the market but I have heard of those causing problems with devices not specifically designed for them.

Given a choice I'd certainly always prefer USB-C to USB-C but I've yet to encounter an in-flight entertainment system with a USB-C socket, while a lot of them have USB-A and the same goes for my car. It's certainly slower to charge from it, and you should make sure your cable is 56 kΩ rated for safety's sake, but sometimes you've got to go with the only choice you have available.

Unfortunately, I don't think that cable is ideal. The key specification is that it be rated 56 kΩ so as to prevent a dangerous current draw from a charger that's unable to supply what the Switch is demanding. In practice, it shouldn't matter so long as the charger you're using can supply at least 1.5A, but there is potential for bad things to happen to both the charger and your Switch if you're not careful.

I figured that, it's no wonder my old phone got damaged. Thank you.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I am looking for a decent power supply and cable for when I am on the go. I am looking to use the Hori stand that is coming out soon and wondered if people have links/suggestions for 3m to 5m cable I can use with one of the power supplies mentioned above.

Cheers!

@PeterW77 When in doubt, use a standard Nintendo cable. I use a 30000mAh charging brick for when I go out and about, but for a day trip, it is massive overkill. With it I can charge my Switch, phone and tablet all at the same time with power to spare. 10000mAh should be plenty. I'd give you a link but idk what region you are in, and I don't want to suggest a product they don't sell in your area.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

I'm not too bothered about having a portable external battery but ensuring that I can undock my switch and plug it in to the wall when I am in another room. Having a 3m+ long cable would really help with that.
