Nintendo has started to distribute a software development kit for the new NX system to third-parties, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The publication cited “people familiar with the matter” in its report. Nintendo could introduce NX “as early as next year.”

Here is another one: http://www.dualshockers.com/2015/10/16/nintendo-has-begun-dis...

This quote really interests me: Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. Now I know this is only a rumour but this screams NeoGeo X at me.

If you don't know what the NeoGeo X is. It is a remade handheld NeoGeo that can plays ROMs on it. But also comes with a base that looks like a old NeoGeo and a controller. You can connect the handheld into the base. Then plug the base into a TV.

A possibility on what Nintendo is doing with the NX? What do you think if they do this? Essentially a handheld console that you can plug into the TV and use a normal controller with it.

Well, this pretty much confirms it's coming in the next year (or maybe two).

But yeah, the whole 'two consoles thing' is definitely an interesting concept. Wonder if it'll be better done than the whole 'GBA to Gamecube' connectivity or the recent attempts done with games like Smash Bros for 3DS/Wii U. I'm hoping for the ability to actually buy games for both systems, or to have games where part is played on the home console and part is played on the handheld one.

Sounds good. I'm A-okay with a 3DS that plugs into my TV and plays games like a PS4.

It will be weird if the console controller is different from the controls on the handheld, though. They'll probably mirror each other, though.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

It's not that though. A "hybrid" like you described was debunked by Iwata. He described it as a family of systems that share a unified OS, more like iPhone and iPad both running iOS and almost all software being compatible with both.

It would imagine that it's not uncommon with the platform structure that Nintendo has had since NES and Game Boy, but with more similar architecture that allows software to be easily scaled and released on all platforms within the ecosystem. It's more of a thing that will let them avoid another Smash situation (having to develop 2 different games simultaneously) or Splatoon situation (popular game severely limited by unpopular platform).

I don't think a docking system is likely though. Who is that a product for?
People who want to play their console games on the go? I think the Vita demonstrated that the market specifically wants none of that sort of thing.
People who want to play their handheld games on a big screen? I think the Wii U demonstrated that the market specifically wants none of that sort of thing.

Though I think some functionality like you describe may be possible too. Modern technology allows you to cast content on your smartphone to your set top box or smart TV. Iwata often spoke highly of the Apple ecosystem and emulated their structure, so maybe he was looking closely at AirPlay too.

"Docking" as a wireless service, not as a physical product.

Fingers crossed this is out next year. I can't wait any longer
