Can you play just plain Tetris with this game, solo, not against the AI? Tried the demo but couldn't find a way to do this but it may just have been locked out?
I find the second game playing alongside a distraction and didn't enjoy my game ending prematurely because I can't keep up with the CPU player
You certainly can. You can jump straight into classic tetris on the main start screen and be playing it literally 5 seconds later.
I have generally learned that I'm awful at Puyo Puyo. I've been honing my Tetris skills since 1989. Thank you Yokoi-san. But Puyo....yikes. Dr. Mario apparently has done nothing to cure my incompetence. IIRC Puyo is actually heavily based on Dr. Mario, but I'm not versed enough in them to pinpoint the differences yet, nor why I'm ok at one and thoroughly suck at the other.
@Lalivero Haha, yeah! "pii pii!! (perhaps an unfortunate choice of consonant sounds by the localization team...) and "gu gu gu guu?" you just grin, even though it's stupid, it's just so silly it works And the ace voice cast just did an amazing job at making this somehow sound serious and zany all at once.
@chardir Haha, so it would. Maybe we should try that on NL. All the chronic complainers/trolls/agitators, we should just tag them and all declare at once. "Let's solve this with a TETRIS BATTLE!"
OK so this is in the UK eShop now but it's £34.99 - the same price as the physical edition!!!
Was under the impression this was going to be a lot cheaper, about £20 maybe. Any idea what gives???
This is why I'm not onboard with digital download with Nintendo consoles. Digital games on the eshop are always priced identical to their physical counterparts (1st or 3rd party), and usually their so-called 'sales' are the worst price drops ever.
Personally, I want to buy this game digitally, as it was a pain in the bum having to bring the cart around for my vita version and it's a pain to do it again for the Switch. But unless the game is dropped to about £15 in a sale, I'll be sticking to my physical Japanese copy.
I've harped on in the past how the Nintendo eShop's prices stick when compared to Sony and MS' offerings. I have gotten some of the highest quality Vita and PS3 games for less than £5. Some B&W GAMEBOY GAMES cost more than that on eShop!
Well, obviously someone's paying these obscene prices to Nintendo so it's not surprising the continue the practice....
I am having loads of fun with this game... horrible at tetris though. Still. I sorta want to tell my mother it is out but I feel like if she knows, my Switch will go missing the next time I visit the Rents.

@Bender1001 Seriously, once monopoly comes out between that and mario kart she is going to start eyeing mine very heavily...I may need to get a kingston lock. I'll likely buy her one for xmas.

The "Lessons" for Puyo Puyo kinda pissed me off I don't see how "stair stacking" is possible in a normal game, where you aren't guaranteed to get the colors you need.
The tutorial should basically say "as long as you're lucky enough to get all the puyos you need when you need them, you're going to have a great time! Otherwise, oh well! By the way, we'll make sure that the CPUs are crushingly good at the game even on the easiest difficulty, and that you are always inundated with rows and rows of garbage so you can never focus on the puzzle aspect of the game."
I love Tetris, but I can't help but feel I'm missing something about Puyo Puyo. The lesson mode made it sound like strategy was possible, but it had the benefit of perfect puyo drops when it needed them, it didn't have to rely on random luck. :/
Wow, I haven't played a good, solid Tetris like this since... gosh, probably since I was making Moscow fly on the NES!
All the modes, the single player campaign, local split screen (4 players!), local wireless, CPU and arcade modes with all sorts of difficulties and handicaps, full online, ghost data can be saved, there's lessons, unlockable content, quick matches on the home menu, cool stuff like holding a block for later and quick drop, tons of variety in aesthetics...
This game... wow. I love it. I love quality games like this. Such a perfect game for multiplayer in tabletop mode at work. We've been playing this, Fast RMX, Shovel Knight co-op, Zelda (well, me while everyone else watches) and this weekend it'll be Mario Kart. Love it!

@TeslaChippie Competitive Tetris isn't really that much different in terms of luck of the draw. You've got a perfect four lines ready to be cleared, but that darn I-block won't appear... stuff like that. The only real difference is that chaining isn't a major part of it.
For Puyo-Puyo, just focus on setting up simple two-chains, while doing simple clears in another location if you get an excess of one color and generally just try to keep the colors as close as possible. The best chains are the ones that happen by accident (which is why an... unorthodox strategy sometimes employed by CPUs involves filling up one side of their screen. Somewhat risky as it limits your play area, but also blocks garbage, and the sheer amount of Puyos makes chains very likely).

@meleebrawler Yeah, I think that's my problem. These games are 95% luck and 5% trying not to panic. It just doesn't feel great that I don't have more control over the outcome of a battle.
You cannot just focus on 2-chains. The CPU gets 4-chains (or back-to-back tetris clears) on you almost constantly from the very beginning of the adventure mode. The difficulty curve is ridiculous.
I also find T-spinning to be pretty fiddly in this game. Like, it's hard to tell whether you're going to be able to pull off a T-spin or Nibelsnarf yourself over irreparably when the block decides to commit in a position you didn't intend. Also, why on Earth did they design the game so that the Puyo Puyo player is at such a big disadvantage? When you're playing Puyo Puyo, all the garbage falls from the top, royally screwing over anything and everything you'd been working on, whereas if you're playing Tetris it comes up from the bottom, leaving all your combos intact. Just doesn't seem very fair.
I dunno, I'm just not having as good a time as everyone else apparently. Thank goodness for Mario Kart
Puyo Puyo AI has always been brutal past the first and second or so stage. Just a holdover from it's arcade origins. Nothing you can do about it except just be better and faster than your opponents. Though from what I could tell of Puyo Puyo 2, you and your opponent seem to get an identical selection of puyos at least in the beginning, so you can't necessarily claim that your opponent won solely due to getting a better one, they just made smarter use of them.

Do prices ever drop on the Nintendo eShop? Like temporary discounts or even price cuts after a year or so? I put this game on my watchlist but I don't have the urge to buy it right now. A physical copy - even when discounted - makes little sense to me as this is the type of game you want to throw in between sessions and swapping the cartridge seems a bit annoying.
@Switchcraft : Depends on the game/publisher. Nintendo games, even VC games, almost never get discounted, and in the rare occasion that they do, it would still be considerably cheaper to just buy it at retail. Other publishers (Ubisoft immediately springs to mind) often discount their games, and some games will eventually be permanently discounted at the discretion of the publisher. Indies often discount or reduce the prices of their games as well.
The only real occasion where Nintendo's own games drop in price is when they are rereleased as part of their "Selects" range.
I keep wanting to come back to this game, despite needing to raid Hyrule Castle and having a blast in Mario Kart.
I really need to go digital. I find I play games more often if they're installed. But I still want my physical, and having all those digital too would run space down quick. Grrr.
I like this game though. It's one of the 3 "essentials" for Switch I think. Zelda, MK8D and Puyo Puyo. No question. This game is perfect for Switch- no wonder it outsold versions on consoles with 30-60 million players.

If @JaxonH says it's an 'essential' then I'm gonna have to give it more consideration.
@mav-i-am - I wasn't aware there was a demo. I'll get on to it, thanks.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
