Topic: Can The Nintendo Switch Be Most Innovative Gaming Console Ever Made?

My thought process was kicked off by reading this article:

While we don't know if the console is going to be worth the money or if 'innovative' is going to solve it, we have to have a discussion about whether Nintendo is the only real console that's trying to do something different.

They might be killing it commercially but they do seem to be attempting to pave the way for a new kind of console. What are your thoughts?

Can it be an innovative step forward and still end up crumpling commercially?

I don't know. And neither do you.

I personally maintain that it will be a moderately successful console though. Like an Xbox One but without cancelling every other interesting game.

But yes, thank god it isn't boring and thank god it isn't just a bad PC. Every time I hear about some of the crap going on with download times and impossibly large file sizes for the competition, I am just sad about console gaming. PS4 owners deserve better. Just by being interesting and seemingly doing things to prevent being PC gaming but worse, that alone makes me want to root for Nintendo. That and they haven't made the mistake of "WE HAVE GAMES FOR THAT HARDCORE CONSOLE YOU OWN TOO, PLZ LOVE US ;___;" that Wii U had.

It is its own thing and it makes me want to at some point by a new console, while the others make me want to get into PC gaming. So it deserves to exist and succeed because of that. Even with the stupid online stuff, which is stupid.

It might not be a commercial success, or it might be another Wii in it's levels of success. Who really knows at this point? (All the Negative Nancy's on this website think they know, though) Ultimately, a hybrid was bound to happen at some point (Vita doesn't really count IMO) and this is the first one to come along, so that's cool. I'll be happy to buy one, both for the functionality of the system and the games we'll be getting.

I just wish the technology was more advanced. Had this thing been up to PS4 levels of power, it could have completely 100% blown everything else out of the water. Not that it can't still be a success, but it would be nice to see Nintendo go back to their former glory, and that would have given them a much better chance.

I don't entirely disagree, but I wonder if it would make a huge difference considering the PS4 and Xbox One upgrade consoles are going.

If it's getting the first real Next Gen Sonic game, I feel like it can't be too difficult to get PS4 games. I mean, I do realize Sonic isn't open world or anything but Sonic Unleashed and Generations were gorgeous games, took advantage of the graphical power they had, I can't imagine that'll suddenly change considering how long it's been since Sonic Team released a new console game.

Yeah that's true, but hey, Sony and MS still need to make games that run on the old systems, so it would work for a while at least. Besides, Nintendo will probably do periodic upgrades anyway, like they did with the 3DS. But yeah, more power than that would definitely be preferable.

I'm very interested in the max graphical capabilities of the Switch. If some magical fairy tale scenario happened and 3rd parties everywhere fully jumped on board, I wonder how large of games we could get without significant downgrades being done to said games. Guess we'll basically have to wait for March 3rd when people tear the Switch apart and tell us the specs.

Yeah we don't know really but it's pretty obvious it's comparable. The jump from last gen was small and Wii U was already better than those in some aspects and this is better .. it is definitely the most kick ass advanced portable ever created and I think it's exciting for many gamers and fans something the Wii U couldn't achieve because honestly it was ahead of its time with the two screens on a large scale like that. Here people can feel like it's regular but also on the Go and that is awesome for them. So it looks good and they added hi tech stuff like the new rumble too.

Actually it is!

Its never been done before!!! Basically you get a portable console that can be connected to a tv screen. Cant think of any other console that could do that!

Hopefully two things will happen: 1. The price (especially for games) will drop a little 2. Lots of meaningful first party content

@Andrzej777 Well, I'm sure that some handhelds are able to stream to a TV. Vita comes to mind if you consider the PSTV to be a dock. I'm more impressed that it's also able to do motion controls. A more powerful version could even do VR.

I have never been to impressed with motion controlls - more of an old school game pad and tv player (even though I like the 3ds portable much more than the wii u nowadays). To me its all about nintendos first party games like botw, mario odyssey and of course the next fire emblem . Pitty they didnt do more for the wii u ...
