Not sure if this counts for what’s being looked for here as there’s not a lot to it, but same sex marriage is allowed in Skyrim.

@Losermagnet There's movies like Moonlight, A Fantastic Woman, The Times of Harvey Milk, The Imitation Game that come to mind but from seeing friends and family come out what helps the more conservative people adjust is seeing LGBTQ people as normal who are just like everyone rather than a silly image of them walking around like Elton John or a deep dive on the culture and history. For example there's a band I like and listened to for years called Against Me!* and then suddenly one day the frontman comes out as trans, on their next tour the crowd at the gigs has a noticeable trans element to it. My mate came away with a completely different impression of trans people after that gig as he always imagined them as ugly drag women but after meeting and talking to some of them at the gig he refers to them as she and has more respect for them now.

*When she came out I loved re-listening to their albums as there was so many lyrics that suddenly made sense with the new information that it was a written about being trapped in a man's body bringing a new experience to them. Actually thinking about it they did an album Transgender Dysphoria Blues which is largely about her experience and thoughts on being trans and coming, it's decent in it's own right too.

It sounds stupid but I actually liked how in Rune Factory 4, you could confess your love to characters of the same sex and they’d politely turn you down. It was strangely realistic. Unfortunately that extended to every character in the game but it would be cool if they introduced characters you could and couldn’t end up with. You can change your skin to any character in the game after you complete it, including the opposite sex MC so there’s technically a workaround as the game still assumes you chose male or female at the start.

@nessisonett Oh is that what would happen? I mean its still kinda has truth, not everyone is gay, And if there not they will likely turn you down.

@kmidst I think it’s more about awareness and acceptance than changing what makes other people themselves.

@Snatcher Yeah, while that’s true, the problem is that characters would shack up with you as long as you gave them enough potatoes regardless. So the only ‘red line’ was if you were the same sex as them. I’m looking forward to the day when we get games in which NPCs just outright refute your advances because you aren’t their type. Although that basically describes Disco Elysium.

@nessisonett Oh, Ye that sucks dude, I think it would be cool if they had some characters be gay as well, So you have you straight characters, and your gay ones, but then again it would suck if you did like that character. your idea is better LOL.

@bimmy-lee I bought Paradise Killer twice based on recommendations! Still haven't played it though — this month has been visual novel central for me and I have had zero free time haha

Now that Ghost Trick and Paper Mario TTYD are on the Switch, I have no purpose in life... EXCEPT TO ASK FOR FANTASY LIFE ON THE SWITCH!!! YEAHHHH BOIIII

@KateGray I also have Paradise Killer and still haven’t played it because I’m knee deep in the first Ace Attorney for the 5th time 😂

@nessisonett I have to ask, Is AT still good if you know some of the cases already?

@Snatcher I’d say so. There’s only a few cases with really great twists anyway and I find the journey towards pinning the killer down the fun part. It’s interesting seeing some foreshadowing as well!

@nessisonett Oh ok, So I will make sure to pick it up next time, thanks!

@bimmy-lee @KateGray Dream Daddy it is! Thanks for the recommendations 😁

@jump there's a major lack of diversity in my area, so i think that is part of the problem. Most of my peers are good people, but they just dont have any first hand experience with these things (myself included). We need more gay farmers, basically is what im saying.

@Zuljaras it does. I forgot all about that one but i think you can swap genders between all of the major characters.

@Snatcher Ace Attorney is great. Highly recommended even if you already know some of the outcomes. Heck i think in the first case you usually know who did it, you just have to catch them in a contradiction.

@KateGray - I’ve been enjoying your dispatches from deep inside the belly of the 1,000 hour visual novel that’s better than all Zalda gaems combined! I’d probably toss Paradise Killer on the backlog at the moment as well, but I’ll probably pick it up at some point.

@Losermagnet - I think it was just on sale recently. We’ve had it a few years, and while we haven’t poured a lot of time into it; we’ve enjoyed the time we spent with it. It’s sort of part daughter raising sim, part dating sim. Lots of play dates. It’s well written, runs the range of emotions, and it’s just totally off the beaten path as far as games are concerned.

What a lovely thread!
Really enjoyed the initial article as well.
I think I've played approx 0 of the games mentioned, so its great that I've got a load more to investigate!

Lists like these will be useful to me if I ever try to dive deep into LGBT games, among other mediums, beyond the ones I would've gotten into regardless of having any sort of LGBT themes or characters.

I can't get this image out of my head of what Brokeback Mountain might have been like in an alternate universe now.
