I've been dreaming of making video games since I first played on my older brothers Game Boy a lifetime ago. Due to Link's Awakening, I fell in love with videogames and Nintendo. Allthough back then I was barely allowed to play any games, or even able to understand what was going on, now I have a huge collection, with an entire shelf of Legend of Zelda games. And my love for and understanding of videogames have only grown.
But I don't like many of todays trends...
I have the idea's, the art skills on paper, the scenario's, characters, stories, mechanics, puzzles, action... all ready in my head and/or on paper allready. I've been thinking one entire concept through lately, but I lack the knowledge of how -and the programs and respective skills- to turn it all from ideas into an actual game.
Anyone has any idea what I could do to advance with these concepts?
Any help is welcome. Ideas, direction, or if you're just the person who can do all I can't, with a shared dream...
Thanks in advance!

Start with Game maker, it's probably the best way to get started making games, and, now, Game Maker is powerful enough to make full retail games, if you take it that far. And there are literally tons of tutorials out there for anything you could possibly think of! And my suggestion would be to jump right into actual coding and skip the drag & drop actions; you'll learn more and the code can do way more than drag & drop. And I'm willing to give you some help if you want.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
Several years ago, I've been trying some Game Maker, and managed to get some simple top-down dungeon crawling done, by drag and drop though... But if you say it has evolved and there's plenty of support, I might try it again indeed. Could it do branching storylines and twin-stick controller support? And hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds?
The idea I have is something that requires twin-stick mechanics, but it's a pretty serious story-driven game with choices, in wartime. But by no means a pure shooter, allthough I need twin-stick controls to get the desired effect...
I'll try it again anyway, thanks for your help and for offering even more help!

That's going to be complicated (the controller bit), but it could be done. Game Maker has built in sprite and background editors, too, so you can definitely do hand-drawn graphics (that's what I do)! I'd start out smaller, and work up to your ultimate goal. I'd try using keyboard controls first, and later try using a controller. I've never done that sort of thing before, but I know it's possible.
@Shambo I'm in your shoes as well I have 2 ideas for videogames but I don't know **** about programming or how to make one. I tried to participate in this contest where you pitch your idea and Renegad Kid would make the game for whoever won but the contest got cancelled. Now I'm just waiting on my friend who's in school because she wants to make videogames the plan is when she's done we'll work together to make something awesome but for now it's nursing school for me. My avatar is from that videogame idea for a sidescrolling horror game.
I'm planning to start with a short game, but I'll do it the old fashioned way:
I'll program in C from scratch a completely text based game! no graphics for my first creation!
