Was wondering if we will ever have the chance to have a system that we can actually pick games. I know they have the NES and SNES classic editions with preloaded games. But will there ever be a time when we can actually pick our own games. Id love to have a system where i can pick games like crystalis, wizards & warriors, krustys funhouse, for NES and krusts, funhouse, lester, zombies ate my neighbors for SNES just to name a few. I have the Marios and Zeldas on my WII U virtual. And my Atari flashbacks vol. 1 and 2 on the Xbox one. But there are a few games no one has that i would love to have without having to buy the systems and all the games.

Licensing is a huge issue here. For every game Nintendo puts on a classic console or VC, they need to negotiate with the original publisher for the rights to do so. I imagine it can get even more complicated when it's a licensed game to begin with, like Krusty's Funhouse. In some cases, where the original publisher doesn't exist anymore, maybe there isn't even a clear rights holder, or the rights holder is no longer interested in the video game business. So we would never be able to pick from all games.

Metroid 5?

Sigh, well that sucks.. It just seems easier if we could actually pick our own games that way. Guess Ill go shopping for a Nes, SNES console and just buy the games. Its just really hard to find some games without paying a high price and/or hoping they work lol

Thx for the input tho

There's always emulation. For old games that are not available for purchase anywhere, I don't see anything wrong with getting a ROM of it, even if it is a legal grey area, at best.

Metroid 5?

Hmmm... Bought my daughter a secondhand DS Lite the other day, along with a GBA cartridge of Pokemon Emerald, but I'm seriously considering one for myself now. Don't really like the piracy aspect of ROMs - but at the same time, if I buy retro GBA or DS carts on eBay, Nintendo doesn't see any of that money either.

I know I could get a 3DS, but I'd rather play old GBA games on my Switch. Alas, Nintendo isn't giving us that option. In fact, all we have been promised is a bunch of NES titles, and I have little interest in the 8-bit era - I lived through it once, and things have mostly only improved since! Zelda, Metroid and maybe Mario 3 are the only titles I might play, unless we also see some of the old third-party JRPGs.

@Krull I completely understand the nostalgia for GBA and that era of games. I recently picked up an HDMI adapter to play Gamecube on modern TVs. And, by extension, the Gamecube Game Boy player. As well as a modded GBA with a backlit screen. I did this because it seems very unlikely Nintendo will give us those options on Switch anytime soon. Though the possibility exists of their coming eventually...
