Topic: Klonoa Discussion Thread

So I just discovered this lovely 2.5D platformer through a Caddicarus review:

Shortly afterwards, I went and bought the first game on my PSP, and I'm in love with it. :3

It has cute visuals, sound effects, adorable characters, gorgeous environments, etc, all the while keeping it interesting and worth playing.

From my understanding, these games usually sell craptons in Japan, but nearly bomb everywhere else (because the visuals are too "cutesy" for "Western" audiences). The last game Namco made in this franchise was Klonoa for the Nintendo Wii.

So guys, discuss whether or not you've played this game (franchise). Do you want to? If you have played this before, what's your favorite entry? Would you like to see a remake/brand new game for the newer consoles?

I have all the stateside releases (the main series and two GBA games). And I think the Wonderswan game floating around in its bin.

It had a really unique look back when it was first released. But then the market became so crowded with 2.5 platformers, it fell by the wayside.

Namco tends to hide him in Tales games frequently. I want to say he even makes a cameo in SCV.

Yeah, I've seen Klonoa everywhere, yet I never knew what game he was from.

Actually from what I understand, the game doesn't even do particularly well in Japan. At best it barely makes a profit on these games. Or so I've heard from a couple of the more hardcore fans of the series. Also I heard that the Wii game, which was budget priced and came out without facing tough competition, only sold 1000 copies in America in its first week. Yikes. Seriously even Little King's Story destroyed those type of sales.

Apparently there was a really great Klonoa RPG that never came out outside of Japan, like one of those fans praised it as like one of the best RPGs he ever played. But anyway, I have a feeling considering his cameos in other Namco games that Klonoa only still gets games because the team loves the series more than it actually being that successful. Which I feel is a shame. I only played the Wii remake and the 2nd GBA game but both were great, Wii game in particular was phenomenal 90s platforming. It also had a shockingly good story all things considered (especially the ending). Honestly should have been Sony's answer to Kirby back in the day.

I'd love to see another Klonoa game, even if it has to go the downloadable only route.

According to the Wikipedia page, it does pretty well inside Japan.

And I agree; it should've been the answer to Kirby. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the review.

I don't care if the game has to be download-only in the future; I just love this series so much. :3

I'll put my admiration for Klonoa this way;

When I discovered this quasi-official continuation of the series, I almost cried because I was so happy.

EDIT: ShiftyLook is officially run and hosted by Namco Bandai games, the owners of the Klonoa IP.

I played a demo of the original a long time ago (my cousin always used to get a bunch of those Jampack PS1 game discs), but I'm afraid that I haven't went beyond that.

If my Wii was still reading dual layer discs, I might of checked out the Wii game (maybe I'll DL the original off of PSN one of these days).

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

There's 2 games for the GBA, and a sequel on PS2. Plus, the original on PSN is definitely worth your time. :3

I loved Klonoa 2 for the PS2, but when my house got robbed we lost it and I can't find a new copy. I would kill to see a collection pack.

I'm not saying let's kill all the stupid people, I'm just saying let's take off the warning labels, and see what happens.

The first one I played was on GBA and I loved it. I got the one on PS2 and loved it too. Now I'll get the PS1 classic for my PSP and fall in love again... The Klonoa games have so much charm!

I need to get some games in this series. The only exposure I've had to it was a demo for the first game, but I remember liking it.
