Looks like EA won't take home their 3rd title this year. They've been eliminated in the first round against Time Warner Cable.

Of course, the title of "Worst Company in America" is sort of misleading. It's based entirely on an internet poll; it's not exactly scientific. It's more of an indication of which companies people are frustrated with in the current year. I don't think anyone truly believes that EA or Time Warner is a worse company than some of the banks and financial corporations involved in illegal business practices that literally ruined people's lives.

With that said, voting in this tournament is a good way for consumers to have their voices heard.

Anyone have strong opinions about who they feel should take home the crown in 2014?

To me it's actually nonsense. It doesn't even tell you why, it's only "because". I mean, I'm not defending anyone, but what makes McDonald's worse than KFC, BK, Taco Bell or whatever? Is it explaind there but I'm blind I don't see it?

To me it looks more like "oh look, EA is the worst because they released buggy game so let's hate", even though Bethesda is THE giant and titan of bugfest, same with Blizzard with their middle fingers to people. What about Valve and their communist steam policies? No, their all gold. Putting "gods" in something like this would be "insult".

wait? does this mean AE games is actually recognized as a company?
because I don't see many others that could be even worse...

and @Dave24 it's not just the products that's a shallow point of view, what matters is the efficiency, the way the workers are treated, the speed to fix problems and the list goes on... the final product is just a fraction of all that is(or should be) rated in such cases.

@Dave24
I'm not exactly sure how Consumerist picks the companies that they include in the voting process. From what I can tell, it started with a list of 40 companies which people then voted on to include in the bracket. I don't know how this list of 40 was compiled though.

I agree that the results are a bit arbitrary, considering people's reasons for voting are often as simple as "I didn't like the Mass Effect 3 ending". Which is why I chuckle whenever someone mentions that EA is "The Worst Company in America" as if it is actual evidence of anything. Still, it's interesting to see what companies people are upset with.

@CanisWolfred
Yikes. I'm in Canada, so I get to deal with Bell and Rogers instead, which are arguably even worse than those two. I'm almost certain that if "Worst Company in Canada' was a thing, that Bell and Rogers would be #1 and #2 easily. I bet Time Warner or Comcast will take the title this year. People seem to really be frustrated with them.

I can only speak from my experience, but Time Warner Cable's customer service is awful, yet Comcast's is even worse. They both use heavily outdated cable boxes and refuse to update them, opting instead to have people constantly return their boxes every other month so they can "fix" them, thus having to deal with their customer service on a frequent basis. They overcharge for their services, but are more than willing to give "discounts" to anyone who complains. Oh, and Time Warner changed all of their channel ordering so I no longer know where anything is...

They're not a disaster of a company, but they sure know how to tick people off.

So you still didn't explain anything - what makes McDonald's worse than KFC? Also, final product is not a fraction, but actually one of the most important things. You don't start a company without a product, right?

Valve would fit perfectly - atriocious customer service, treating customers like dogs... or will you tell me something like "it doesn't matter".

As @WesCash said, it is arbitrary. And I agree with you, I chucke every time too when everyone says that "EA is the worst because ME3 ending" or it's the worst game evah because of it.

@Dave24 actually no matter how perfect a product is, whatever happens behind the scenes is more important(OR AT LEAST SHOULD BE) I mean the end doesn't justify the means if you get what I'm trying to say

Huh, I've never heard too many people complain about Valve. Mind explaining? I'm a PC gamer and use Steam on a daily basis. I've never contacted Steam support myself or had any interactions with their customer service though.

@CanisWolfred
Sounds exactly like my experience with Rogers.

Their customer service is pretty much this - you write e-mail with the problem, they maybe, just maybe, will reply to you. In a month. EA at least will respond faster.
Pernament deletion of your account and games, because they feel like it. Only they are right, and customer has no voice what so ever. You got banned or don't know what happend and why you can't play your games? Whops, you out of luck, you are bad and they don't have to explain it to you. Also, if you won't agree with their SSAA, they will be more than happy to delete your account with all your games. And you have no alternitive. So they are making you to agree to whatever they want by threat of taking your "rental" service account hostage.

Like 20 euro for Tomb Rider, which I can get cheaper at retail? Great "sale". From what I've noticed, these sales are best in US. Also, EA has sales too. And all that what? Months of waiting for reply or agreeing to deleting your rental service account without even explaining why?

@Dave24
It could very well be a regional difference; I just noticed you're in Poland. I've seen Tomb Raider at $7.50 (about 10 euros) and lower. I'm in North America and Steam support seems to be pretty good for most people here. It's a shame, because the problems you described are definitely a big deal.
