In this day and age, everything is a fight to be the best, but which is the best console? So far Sony and MicroSoft have brought no new console to the table. Are they cooking up the ultimate console? Nintendo appears to be winning over audiences everywhere with the Switch, being the first of its kind. Who do you think is crushing competitors? Who has the upperhand? Will the Switch stay the only one of its kind? What do you guys say?
Is the Switch technically this gen as the Wii U was the one that went up against the like of PS4 for Gen 8 or is this gen 8.5 with the Switch, PS4 Pro & Xbox One X?
I hope all the major players are doing well to provide healthy competition and drive more consumer friendly behaviours. Switch has certainly won me over in terms of form factor, Sony won with actual games and MS has won with backwards compatibility and their approach to first party games and subscription model.
@TriForcePikaJN
Depend on the country.
My country Indonesia is SUCK when talking about video games.
Playstation is everywhere, 99 % are PIRATED. Peoples are keep glorifying those machines even Pirated & Hacked. Even on Ghetto area, peoples over there Just only know Playstation name, NEVER knew Nintendo moreover Xbox.
Nintendo is preferable in Indonesia but very little. Wii, NDS, 3DS & Switch are Most Favorite Nintendo products in Indonesia.
Xbox was (Almost) Never talked about in Indonesia. But, ONLY Xbox 360 talked a lot than old Xbox & Xbox 1. And same with Playstation, XBOX 360 is Heavily pirated in Indonesia 99.99%. Almost No Game shop in Indonesia display Original Xbox 360 & Xbox 1 games.
PS4 still, Nintendo need to up their game. Luckily it seems they were forgiven for the Wiiu monster. The Switch has had a good reception since launch but it now needs good games from Nintendo and strong 3rd party support to fill the games between Nintendo's 2 or 3 first party games a year! Also drop the stupid phone app to chat to people playing online. Allow chat to everyone not restricted to friends. Nintendo is not responsible for kids, parents can turn parental control feature on so I can't hear their 12 year old swear at me if they're losing! We already have to keep charging to many devices already, so don't wanna keep killing phone batteries thanks. If you want me to start paying a subscription for online then you need to actually be offering a service for it! Voice chat for all, party chat, a Web browser, YouTube and streaming services on the Switch to justify it like Sony and Microsoft who can actually offer something sensible and have been doing so for over 15 years now. On the plus side no friend codes with the Switch, lol.
Sony have won it by far. I thought Nintendo might compete when the Switch got off to such a good start but now 2018 has loads of AAA PS4 exclusives and almost nothing for the Switch so I think Nintendo will have squandered their early momentum quite badly.
They'll do well in 2019 but that early momentum is so important to get right because it makes more big developers start making games for the platform.
@TriForcePikaJN It depends how you want to measure "winning". Total sales to date? Current sales trends? Do we go by software numbers? What about raw power? Creativity? Diversity or genres? Perceived popularity? Asking who's winning the "console wars" is like asking who is winning without specifying what game we are playing and what the rules are.
But one thing I do expect, Sony and Microsoft will continue releasing the same product over and over. While Nintendo will keep doing it's own thing that sometimes succeeds wildly and sometimes fails epicly.
True that bruv. But E3 it was like all Nintendo had to show was another Smash Brawl but with like a thousand fighters on the roaster lol, not really a brawl or fighting game fan but nice to see Snake back in again. Like they've just spent loads of time on that 1 game. Nothing of Metroid apart from a logo still and where the heck was Travis strikes back? Was really a pity saw no more updates on No more heroes, just hope it's not no more game lol. A new Starfox or Lugi's mansion 3 teaser, but just mainly Brawl, pokemon and some dlc! Also Dark souls remastered for the Switch missed the May release with the PS4 and Xbox1 versions and has just gone dark with a vague summer maybe release? Probably get the Wolfenstien port before it now? What's with the weird cardboard LABO or whatever its called, why waste time on cardboard toys? The only good thing as we know to do with cardboard boxes is to hide in them to evade detection or leap out and traq dart a guard, Snaaaaaaaakeee! Make some games not cardboard please. Sure the Switch is getting nearly all wiiu decent games ported to it. However they'll soon run dry and although Nintendo do make some great games they are few because Nintendo development is like slow motion time and that's where good 3rd party support can help a console in sales. Ubisoft are probably still cautious after the Wiiu, leaving Bethesda as its main 3rd party support and they can do decent ports with the unreal engine on the Switch. Sure there is indie games but although a few good ones they're mainly just simple retro platformers. The Switch as we know got off with a good launch and reception especially as Nintendo still had the shadow of the Wiiu on them. However if the Switch at launch only had 1-2 switch it wouldn't of been flying off the shelf. It was Zelda BotW that sold it I guess, and Nintendo repeated a sneaky business practice again. A game originally developed for the Wiiu was being held back and delayed to convert to an other system because if they had released BotW when it should have been on the Wiiu people who love the Zelda IP would of already got the Wiiu version and not many people would pay out again for a new console just to play the same game later converted to cartridges just to see if it really did taste awful if you licked it? They did exactly the same thing with Zelda Twilight princess by not releasing it on the Gamecube until a few weeks after being sold as a wii launch title. At least it wasn't quite as bad this time as the 2 versions of Zelda BotW got release together on the same day. Just imagine if when the Switch launched its killer app was 1-2 switch, lol. For a while after the Switch got released it was playing one game for most people who brought it, an almost perfect game apart from the poor cheaply made weapons lasting only a few hits and then turning to dust apart from one special sword engraved with the trifoce logo, and maybe a little bit to much focus on cooking bugs and stuff. Hey guys maybe Nintendo will make Zelda overcooked next? The Nintendo online service is also in need of a serious over haul on the Switch also. If they are soon selling subscriptions to play any Switch game online then the phone app should be dropped as it's a terrible idea to use for chat, I am fine with game apps like certain games have already to keep stats and stuff of progress but to be forced to kill phone batteries just to play with communication is plain dumb. Sony and Microsoft have a perfect way to chat add new friends and play games that require communication and Nintendo doesn't still seems 20 years behind online gaming! I did enjoy playing local co op years ago but hardly few games offer it now. If players don't want to use chat features online then they can just choose not to, or if someone is talking rubbish just mute them. As I said if parents have worries or issues about some other kids swearing or online safety then that's why all consoles have parental controls built in the settings. Nintendo should not feel any response for others online activities and not force players from being unable to chat in game unless a friend you've exchange a very long digit code with. Oh that was the Wiiu, Wii or DS but really the awkward app is just as bad. I might of got the Payday 2 port on Switch if I could actually talk to my bank robbery crew standing next to me, but unfortunately in the Switch version everyone is deaf and I can't do sign language with the joy cons!
The big corporate CEO's are the only ones really winning it! Season pass, loot boxes, dlc, content behind pay walls, micro transactions, and pay to win, lol
Sony has undoubtedly won this generation, and for good reason. They really brought the games and continue to do so, whereas Xbox is really only just starting to sorta kick into gear, and Nintendo utterly bombed with the Wii U. Time will tell if they can surpass the PS5/Xbox Two with the Switch, but they're not really bringing the games in 2018 IMO. Kirby, Mario Tennis, Super Mario Party, Smash, and Wii U ports. Not a stellar lineup at all. I just hope they turn things around in 2019.
