Topic: What's Your Career of Choice?

I was just reading about different career choices and got to wondering about what all of you want to do for a living.
As for me, I'm currently entertaining two different possibilities: 1) Creating my own animated television show. 2) Becoming a video game designer.

I foresee what you'll do there.

While I don't want to put you off, I think both of those things are more involved than just deciding you want to do them. For example, to become a video game designer you'll either need to learn enough to make games independently (certainly doable, but somewhat risky - the indie game scene is pretty crowded these days) or work your way up from the bottom in a VG company. If you do the latter, you'll be a long way from designing video games depending on your area, you'll probably be creating menu art or coding up very basic parts of games for a long time before you start doing anything approaching game design.

I think the same thing is true for the television show. Very few people can claim to be the 'creator' of a television show, even fewer a successful one. Don't let that discourage you, but it's not like it's easy to jump straight into these top jobs immediately.

As for me, I'm a physicist. At this stage, I'm working my way towards academia, but that'll be quite a while away yet. I'm currently a postdoctoral scholar (just one step above a grad student).

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

I'll have to agree with @Wheels2050 somewhat. It's not something someone just decides to do. But if you're really into either, make it a reality(Just not a reality TV show). If you want to do VGs, I'd recommend starting with iOS.

I know. I guess 'designer' really isn't the word I was looking for. I just want to work somewhere in the gaming industry (most likely for a company). As for the TV show, I plan to work as an animator or a member of a creative team. If I gain enough experience and credibility there, then I'll try creating my own show (I already have ideas).
Thanks for the input. I hope your studies go well.

I'm an accountant. 21 years old

Although I previously studied to become a Chef. I was an Independent "pro" wrestler since I was 15 and retired about a year ago because that didn't earn me enough money for a living and i've suffered quite a few injuries that i'll regret my whole life for getting.

All in all I ended up being an accountant. Why? i'm good with numbers and I found the class to be easy enough for me. Sure, it's hard work! But it leaves good pay.

I'm a 3rd year undergraduate student majoring in bio-medical science. Once my 4 years are done I'll probably get a graduate degree in something (public health maybe??).

I've thought about going to medical school but it's just so expensive, hard to get into, and a ton of work. I have over a 90 GPA, but I'm incredibly lazy. I just want to get a decent job where I can do something I find interesting.

Anyone else here have any experience in the medical or health fields?

OK, fair enough. As @3Dash said, 'video game designer' and 'tv series creator' aren't really jobs that someone just decides to do - they require lots of hard work, promotions and luck. I often see people say that they want to do something like that and don't seem to realise that it's a long, hard pathway to getting those sort of positions.

Good luck with it, though!

My one piece of advice for people looking at jobs would be to keep in mind that it's not the end of the world if you want to change careers. I know people who really don't like their job, but feel that they've put so much time and effort into their current job that they're obliged to stay there. That's not the case - sure, changing jobs isn't a trivial thing so don't just up and quit the moment you have a bad day, but if you decide that things really aren't working out it's OK to reassess and perhaps move into something different.

Job satisfaction is a very important thing!

I agree. I know that the careers I've chosen will require a great deal of work, but they are what I like to do. I've also considered alternatives in the fields of geology and meteorology. But yes, job satisfaction is a must.

Well I "dream" of designing video games. I guess I could make an indie team with a couple of others. I actually have thought it would be cool if I could make Warioware and Rhythm Heaven-type games on iOS. They have a perfect fit for that, and none has done it yet! I guess if I really wanted to get noticed is put games on the eshop. Well, what do I know, coz I'm only in grade 8 and I know not a single thing about coding!

But If I was to be more realistic, I think it would be modest to just be a school teacher at the primary school I went to. I have always wanted to teach...

Currently playing: Rhythm Heaven, Minecraft (XBLA), Pokemon B/W 2, Halo 4, The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave, Fallblox, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GCN)

Will be playing soon: Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Cave Story +, Wii U: NSMBU, Nintendo Land, (And lots more!)

@PoshSnivy
I don't know anything about making video games either. But I want to learn. Even if I never get too good at coding, I would still like to come up with stories and other innovative features for video games. So don't give up your dream just yet. Teaching is an honorable career too.

I foresee what you'll do there.

I want to develop games, but if it turns out that I just can't wrap my head around coding, I'll just settle for being a lawyer and making ludicrously large amounts of money.

I used to travel the stars, then I discovered Earth, and these incredibly addicting things called 'Video Games.'
And they said you couldn't buy happiness!

Wheels2050

Keep in mind that having another job doesn't mean you can't make games as a hobby

Odd way of putting it, but okay.

Since I mostly like to draw when not on the internet or playing games, I want to be an illustrator someday, perhaps even doing my own graphic novels/web comics, or at least the covers of a book. And it would be my dream to do mecha designs for something. I come up with designs every day in my head. Now I just need to get good enough at art to I could actually draw them without making them look like ***.

Why does this question keep following me?! I don't know. Honestly, I'm just thinking of doing what would make my parents happy since I'm basically out of time to think of one. I'd love to write manga or illustrate a series in general as a career. I've spent some years laying out a plot and developing characters in my head for a series of mine...I just need to improve my art.

Same. I wish I could help ya in that regard, but if I new a secret, I'd probably already be doing it right now. Only thing I can tell you is to draw as frequently as you can.

I wonder if those how-to-draw books are any help...

While I'm not one to tell others what to do, my advice would be that this generally doesn't end well.
