Topic: Why don't we promote people with seniority and posts

I think there should be a ranking system. For being a longtime active member and posting comments on the site that are useful, we should get promoted, and it wouldn't be a gimmick, either. For example, there might be 10 ranks, first you could only make comments, but as you were promoted, you could write reviews, make forum topics, and some other things. When you post give some ideas and if you think it would work.

I don't think that's a bad idea. Except for the part that you have to get promoted to make forums.

Post count and thread count are no indication of a users contribuation, rank would promote qauntity over quality in terms of content, no need for silly titles, all that leads to is chasing rank, encouraging more posts not better posts, there is already a thread concerning rank and it was a bad idea then, and a bad idea now.

I'm already on this website way too much. A ranking system would boost my ego and feed my inner megalomaniac. I approve.

But what about seniority, there is no way to really get around that, plus you might not feel overwhealmed

We have mods and admin who keep the site in check, "I'm better than you cause I've been on the site longer" badges are not needed, that's not seniority, that's just plain silly.

Seniority has nothing to do with post count. Click a user's name or avatar to see when they joined if you want to discern "seniority."

I like this idea. I've seen it go over well in the past. Mods would award ranks to regular contributors, and/or those who show themselves to be an asset to the community.

i always hated that system. it encourages spamming for nothing more than some sort of title for yourself. i also think that anybody should be allowed to make a forum or write a review as they please. i wouldnt like it if i had just joined and i had to wait a month before i could make a thread about Sin and Punishment 2. it also sets up a hierarchy in the site. it makes it seems like someone is better than the next because they made more posts, I.E. a person who joined a week ago is scum compared to that guy from 2007. id just like to be able to talk on the forums in peace without any gimmicks or status

@KS8: but then it becomes a battle to see who can suck up the hardest. it's not really fair to play favorites with people like that IMO... NL is a place where anyone can come and participate, but this ranking system sounds too complicated. besides, anyone who's been here long enough knows who to listen to and who to ignore anyway, and if you haven't figured it out yet, lurk moar, y'know? visible symbols (except to separate staff from non-staff) aren't necessary.

and don't even get me started on post counts. i love the fact that NL doesn't have those. it's so irritating on other forums sometimes when people are just participating in long, annoying conversations consisting of nothing but one-word replies and such just because they're trying to get their post count up. :/

Okay, but what about people who have been here for ages and have proven themselves worthy? That's mostly what I foresee. Awards going towards older members.

I like any idea that shows how great I am.

You could report being and would be banned if this would pop up (which it will, so people would enforce it early). Pointless posts would be deleted and the user would be banned for however long the staff sees fit.

@KS8: symbols and ranking are intimidating. anyone should be able to come in and start participating on the forums without fear of being talked over or outright ignored just because they haven't been here long enough -- and even people with older sign-up dates often spout random nonsense. rank is useless except for showing off and/or bragging. again, we all know who we are here, and if someone doesn't, all they have to do is keep their eyes open and watch for the common sense posts. :3

I agree with reala, briunj04 and tbd because it could lead to over competitiveness as well as other reasons that have been stated by other members.

@KS8: considering you'd be one of the people with a little star by their name, i can see why you'd be down for it
