It is going to turn toxic real quick, a lot of sites are getting away from that kind of thing due to it's negative impact on communities and here they just added it.
I love a good downvote. Nothing brightens my day more than posting something that goes against the tide on reddit and then checking back later to see how many have downvoted me.
I think it is a useful tool to highlight posts. For example, only today someone was posting unconstructive comments with a name faecesface and their avatar was a lady's smeared face. It was totally inappropriate (irrespective of whether the brown substance was a face mask or not) and I would have clicked the thumbdown instantly. Especially if it can lead to comments being removed or users banned.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
in these forums, what is the point, 95% of people that have a "thumbs down" opinion, they will flat out tell you, and putting a button won't prevent them from stating their opinions anyway.....redundant
I think giving humanity free will was a mistake. The constant clash of ideology and opinion in a never ending conflict of interests and ideals just dampens any kind of reasonable discourse that can be had, especially online behind barriers of anonymity and relative safety.
The thumbs-down button is just yet another way to amplify it by trying to deter from verbal lashings in favour of what is theoretically a quicker alternative to attacking someone.
But like all deterrents it will just lead to further problems, further problems will need further solutions, and so the cycle continues as the site grows. C'est la vie.

Thanks for the initial feedback, however, I think you are making some large assumptions here.
We haven't even detailed how the down vote system works... this is intentional. At present, we want to see how people use it without knowing what it does or how it works, but I can assure you it won't be the same as other websites
@Knuckles-Fajita
as free will goes, you are very much entitled to live without such, many countries allow for the restriction of such harmful thought basis, N. Korea, China, Russia, ect.
or cults, they come in handy, even religious extremists are very much against free will, go little chicken or sheep or lemming, or especially tiny ant or buzzy bee, live what you may consider a more meaningful life.
just remember if it wasn't for the rogues, rebels and other free thinkers, you would still be dressed in animal skins, hauling a club around, all of this would not exist without histories "free thinkers" and those that choose to implement those free thoughts.

@antdickens Lets hope, but the fact remains that this is very far from being a new concept. I am just basing this off my personal experience with other websites that have a downvote system, and it has seemingly always become something that slowly gets abused until the entire social commentary section becomes a popularity contest.
@GrailUK Well, there's a big 'Report' button for that; we get notified of anything that's reported. I'm not sure the downvotes are useful to the moderators as of now.
@GrailUK
the face looked like a simple mask scrub, my daughters and wife use them all the time, as for the name, so what, it wasn't vulgar and if he wants to be remembered here as a "dumb poo", let it be
