Topic: What Is The Future For The Nintendo DS/DSi Series? Will It Survive the 3DS Attack?

Roumer has it that Nintendo are going to stop making DS games and proceed to making 3DS games. So basically DS games will become old news, like GBA carts for example, and 3DS games will become new news, like DS games were to the GBA. As the Nintendo 3DS is around the corner from release, this worries me. I won't be getting a 3DS anytime soon because I have just gotten my Nintendo DSi XL (for Christmas) that replaced my much loved Nintendo DS Lite that sadly died out on me. What do you guys think? Have any news on what Nintendo's going to do?

Due to the size of the market even if first party support ends third party will continue. Just like the PS2. Even if they sell 20-30 million in the first 2 years if I were a developer I might still prefer to make a game for the 140+ million DS units.

Don't know. That is up to the developers. The only other system in recent years that had those kinda sales numbers was the PS2 and there have been a few of those games out in recent years even with the PS3 on the market. We can also look at the GBA. On November 6, 2006, Final Fantasy V Advance was released 2 years after the DS was released. The GBA had an install base of about 81 million.

Samurai Deeper Kyo was released on the GBA on February 12, 2008 in North America. Not quite 3 years ago.

That is true, but I wouldn't expect to see many more DS games from them. What will happen with the DS when the 3DS comes out will be the same as what happened to the GBA when the DS came out: there'll be a few more releases, but they'll get less and less frequent and after about a year there probably won't be any at all. Like it or not, the 3DS is replacing the DS. There'll no doubt be a few more DS games after the 3DS launches (the new Kirby DS game, for instance), but don't expect many at all.

5 to 6 big games are confirmed to be released. There are another 8 to 10 that I'd like to see localized that are just... a flip of the coin as far as I can predict as to leaving Japan. Beyond that I expect little past 2011 other than movie tie-ins and other shovelware. No console lives forever - unless you consider emulation, and on that front, it will be intriguing to see how the DS's unique format is recreated if at all in - and the DS has had an awesome run with another year yet to bridge.

I remember that Nintendo's gonna bring some Japanese-only releases to the west, for final hurrah for DS.

But is that really a good idea for Nintendo to do that? Many people have just purchased either a Nintendo DSi XL or DSi. Then they release another console that comes out in 2011! People aren't going to want to throw away their DSi(XL) just yet. This makes no sense to me...the GBA is understandable but not the Nintendo DS game series!

Well, the DS series has been around for 6 years. Nintendo always does this, as Aviator said. Eventually, they will release something brand new. Whether the old thing is supported always depends on its sales. For example, Gamecube didn't see too much after the Wii came out, but the the PS2 still saw a LOT even after the PS3 came out. The DS's sales are nearing the PS2 at this point, so it's likely that DS will still see many games, particularly from thrid parties who are releasing games on multiple systems anyway. There probably won't be a whole lot of DS exclusives after this Spring, but before then you still have Okamiden, Pokemon, and that Kirby game that they've given very little info on.

Thank you for the information SuperMarioFan96! Well, I guess it can't be THAT bad! Ill just purchase games that are already out because I know that MANY DS games exist in europe and Japan. We will just have to see what the future holds for the Nintendo DS.
