Topic: Something Strange About Rune Factory...

So recently, I've been able to get my hands on Rune Factory Frontier, Rune Factory 2, and Rune Factory 3, all in anticipation for #4's release.

Now, let me preface this by saying that although I love Harvest Moon, I have never played ALL the games. I cannot speak on behalf of the entries I have not played, but from the looks of it, the cast of every Harvest Moon game I've played (ANB, ToTT, Sunshine Islands, Grand Bazaar), while not always friendly and overly cheesy, were at least approachable people with flaws and quirks of their own. They never felt too out of place, and they reacted to their situation and how you (the player) approach them.

Rune Factory, on the other hand, has a very over the top, and somewhat terrifying cast. They're not terrifying as in "OMG these characters are dark and scary", but it's more like the game is throwing curve balls at your face without giving you a chance to react. I've spent decent amounts of time with both Frontier and 3, yet the people featured in the latter just rub me the wrong way. There's being cartoony, but cartoons are built around that aspect of over-the-top silliness to bring laughter and enjoyment in its own right. Rune Factory 3, on the other hand, is just too weird too quickly. It might be a nitpick, but even though the game is supposed to be a comical fantasy farming game, the atmosphere just doesn't make me feel comfortable; for a franchise that's all about atmosphere (yes, I am aware RF is a spinoff), this just doesn't bode well.

TL;DR Has anyone else noticed how weird and sometimes uncomfortable the characters in Rune Factory (specifically 3 being discussed here) can make you feel uncomfortable?

I only have the first game and the people is quite normal by harvest moon standards.

You can buy it from natsume's online store, I heard they restocked it quite recently so they may still have some copies left!

@Morphtorok Frontier on the Wii is a retelling/sequel of the first game. The same characters are featured, but they all sport a slight redesign (my personal favorite is Lara's). I already have RF1 on order from GameStop, but if they're anything like they were in Frontier, then I can see where you're coming from.

Still, even there, they were kind of off-putting sometimes...

[researches about frontier's characters]

Huh... The only returning characters are the marriageable girls.

Oh I get it now! It's not a remake, it's a direct sequel.

The characters (you and a bunch of girls for some reason) moved to another town of sorts.

Well, the rune factory wiki does say this about one of the non returning characters:

Although she's not a bachelorette in Rune Factory: Frontier, Tori will stay in touch with Raguna and send him several letters. Due to a change in localization companies for Frontier, she is referred to as Tart/Torte in her letters.

It kind of means they're the same people,I think,

@Morphtorok Okay... I see... I think...

Speaking of which, apart from RF1 and Frontier, why does everyone who's not an "adult"/older character look like they're 12?! (especially in RF2)

Well, other than the fact that these games are Japanese... It seems that during the second half of the game your character and love interests are actually very young! ... And you can "marry" a pair of twins lolz.

You should see 2... I have 2...
I am not very sure what you mean other than Mana's father in Rune Factory 2. When Mana gives you something optional to do he tells you to do just that, but he means mandatory, and on top of that he ALWAYS yells at you and doesn't want you to marry Mana because she's his daughter, the other reason I forgot.

I have nothing really to say about myself.

Well in the first game when you rescue Mist from a moster she says you look like the "farmer type" and offers you her farm... And if you say no, she'll insist. You saved her and she has to give you something in return. You can't say no in the end.

You later learn that she has told several other people in the town and every single visitor she finds how they look like the farmer type and if they want to work in her farm.

Kinda creepy!

O.O Good thing I got game 2...
I freaking hate Mana's father. I accidentally didn't save though, and I should pick it up.
Edit: I noticed when the guy says "Rune Factory 2!" It sounds like in Left 4 Dead 2 when Ellis says "Tattoos!"
Another Edit: Also, it seriously seems like everyone's a kid because when Cammy is in the doctor's room, she cries because she skinned her knee... An adult wouldn't complain about that...
